Research Topic

CONDENSATION OF STEAM-HYDROGEN MIXTURES INSIDE CLOSED CONTAINMENT
During LOCA, integrity of containment is threatened by high pressure and possibility of local burning of hydrogen inside the containment. Therefore, it becomes essential to estimate local steam condensation rate to maintain the pressure within design limits and more importantly prediction of local flammable region of hydrogen–steam–air mixture inside the containment for safe operation. It will help in locating PAR and devising adequate accident measures. Main objectives of present study are: (Ι) Measurement of local and average HTC during film condensation of steam. (ΙΙ) Variation of HTC with hydrogen concentration and operating steam pressure. (ΙΙΙ) Development of inverse heat transfer technique based sensor and its application for measurement of local heat transfer.

Research Topic

The importance of pure water in the society cannot be over-emphasized. If water is purified using renewable energy, the process would be affordable and can be implemented on a large scale. Several researchers have proposed a solar still in this context wherein impure water is evaporated using solar energy and the condensate is collected as the process output. Solar still has several advantages including simplicity but has a poor water collection rate on a per unit area basis. Membrane distillation processes have been used in the separation industry and can be considered as an enhancement step for solar stills.
