Research Topic: Air Intakes are one of the major components of any aircraft engine. It contributes uniquely to the generation of thrust. In any application subsonic transport or supersonic fighter the air intakes are essentially a fluid flow duct whose task is to ensure the engine functions properly to generate thrust. Buzz is a self-excited diffuser instability and it involves periodic filling and discharge of the plenum chamber, complex shock boundary layer interaction, shear layer/slip stream boundary layer interaction, transient shock movement and flow separation. It adversely affects the mass flow entering the engine and may lead to combustion instability, engine surge and flame out.

Research Topic: Numerical and Physical modelling of interaction of shallow ground anchors subjected to static loading conditions In general, shallow foundations are the most common type of foundation systems used in geotechnical industry. Structures such as transmission towers, mooring system in oceans and submerged platforms are more often being subjected to pullout forces. Further, the uplift resistance becomes more dominant in case of foundation systems such as harbour and quay walls, suspension structures, anchorage for abutments and guyed structures. This type of foundation system subjected to uplift or lateral forces are referred as ground anchors. More often these systems are laid in group or multiple. In such cases, theories those developed without considering the effect of the other may land up in misleading design consideration.

Research Topic: A Hybrid Approach for the Remediation of Chlorinated Pesticides : There is a need of hybrid approach for the treatment for the pesticides. In recent year NZVI (Nano Scale Zero Valent Iron) shows a promising reagent for the treatment of chlorinated pesticides via reductive dechlorination. But NZVI also have some issues of their mobility and toxicity. NZVI produce ROS (reactive oxygen species) via Fenton chemistry, which may affect the nearby ecosystem. With the use of proper stabilizer, we can solve the problem of mobility and toxicity. This work proposes a possible synergistic effect of these two techniques to overcome their limitation for the remediation.

In multistory buildings , we find service ducts such as electricity pipes,AC ducts etc passing beneath the soffit of RC beams. False ceilings are used to cover the ducts for aesthetic reasons. But, this leads to wastage of precious space which leads to uneconomical design. Proposal is to pass service ducts through transverse beam openings which will lead to economical and compact design. Proper design of beam openings become a key issue.

Research Topic: Rate dependent plasticity of soil and instability behavior: The objective of this study is to assess the rate effect phenomena in soil with emphasis on particle interaction and effect of pore pressure on stress-train behavior at high strain rate. Presently, work is going on development of a new rate dependant constitutive model capable to predict high strain rate effect during fast monotonic loading. Instability and stain localization phenomenon under high strain rate is another focus of this study. A general framework for predicting various types of instability under rate independent loading has been established and the analysis will be extended for rate dependent conditions to study high strain rate induced instability phenomena.

Background: Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is being used to solve the strong form of fluid dynamics differential equations. SPH is a mesh-free method that relies on the particle view of the field problem and approximates the continuity and momentum equations on a set of particles. This method is used to develop a meshfree numerical model to simulate the free surface flow problems without using any mesh. The basis of the method is interpolation theory which is based on the theory of integral interpolants.

Research Topic: This work broadly focuses on the design of a framework for Distributed Energy Resource (DER) management based on self-optimizing and self-healing clusters of consumers and producers. Consumers and producers participate in clusters based on negotiated service level agreements (SLAs). Clusters are (approximately) autarkic and adaptive.Cluster membership and SLAs can be (re-)negotiated due to changes in the environment, the (forecasted) availability of energy resources, the overall energy market, but also participants’ forecasts of their own needs and possibilities. This allows for local, decentralised S/D management based on SLAs, reducing complexity on a wider scale; and it provides the basis for stability of the power system through reconfiguration. It thus also allows for preparing load shedding and system restoration / re-configuration schedules for system failures.

Research Topic: This thesis concentrates basically on the synthesis of generalized multi stopband filters. The frequency transformation has been used for the transformation from low-pass prototype to multi stopband filters. A simpler and efficient procedure for synthesizing both symmetric and asymmetric multi-bandstop frequency responses including any number of stopbands is presented. For the implementation of filter metamaterial resonators has been used because metamaterial structures offer a compact dimensions and exceptional features. These metamaterial mushroom resonators are much smaller in size compared to the conventional Right-Handed resonators. Thus, these resonators have significant advantages in building filters with small.Designed and development of Tunable multiple stopband filters using dielectric resonators for satellite applications.

Research Topic: Contention resolution using burst segmentation in Optical Burst Switching. One of the key problems hindering the realization of optical burst switching (OBS) technology in the core networks isthe losses due to contention among the bursts at the core nodes. Handling contention losses is a unique problem in bufferless OBS networks which cannot be handled similar to congestion in the traditional networks. Various schemes such as optical buffering, wavelength conversion, burst segmentation (BS), and deflection routing are proposed for contention resolution in the literature. The Burst Segmentation scheme avoids the loss of entire burst and helps in the recovery of at least some packets in a burst and can reduce the packet loss probability by a significant extent.

Existing technique of Mesh and Ring protections have their own even and odds. p-Cycle (Pre-configured cycle) concept is based on searching ring in the Mesh Topology and it combines the benefit of both ring as well as mesh. Research Topic: With rapid development of microwave & millimeter wave technologies, developing wireless components and systems are of prime interest now a days. At these frequencies, the circuit building blocks are closely related to each other via electromagnetic couplings and interconnect which can be eliminated by the use of non planar waveguide based circuits. Recently a new technology has emerged known as "Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW)" which incorporates waveguide circuits in planar form & thus inherits the advantages of both planar & non-planar circuits. Realization of different components e.g. antennas, filters, directional couplers, diplexers with SIW technology have attracted much attention among the researchers in recent years. Different antenna feeding configurations e.g. cavity backed slot antenna, waveguide slotted array antennas can be implemented using SIW technologies. The objective of the proposed research work is to study different configurations for both single element and multi-element slot antennas in SIW environment to improve its performance in terms of bandwidth, gain, efficiency etc.

There are different methods to reduce friction drag.One of the active flow control method is synthetic jet.A synthetic jet is produced by interaction of train of vortices that are typically formed by alternative momentary ejection and suction across an orifice such that net mass flux is zero. It is a refractive index based optical technique used to obtain both qualitative and quantitative information. Currently I am developing such an innovative stereoscopic schlieren technique based on conventional z-type schlieren system to study three-dimensional natural convective fluid flow. I have also worked on developing of theoretical model of heat engine cycles based on Finite Time Thermodynamics. In the model of an air standard irreversible Otto cycle model, the non-linear relation between the specific heat of the working fluid and its temperature, the friction loss computed according to the mean velocity of the piston, the internal irreversibility described by using the compression and expansion efficiencies, and the heat-transfer loss are considered. The heat leak rate between two reservoirs is considered for further analysis of irreversible Otto cycle. The effects of specific heats which are dependent on the temperatures of the model cycles are also studied.

Research Topic: My topic of research is reduced order modeling of high dimensional frictional hysteretic systems. Hysteresis is a history-dependent, approximately rate-independent, irreversible phenomenon observed in e.g., material stress-strain relationships, magnetism. Hysteresis in material behavior is high dimensional and deeply nonlinear. In my first work (PRSA, 2014), we have derived a six-state hysteresis model from a high dimensional frictional system. The low dimensional system captures a wide range hysteretic behavior for variety of temporally complex forcing histories. In a follow up work to the first work (RSOS, 2015), we have studied a more intuitively appealing system from which we have derived a tow-state model with only six parameters. We have demonstrated parameter fitting to match different specified hysteresis loops.

SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) system is used for detection, classification and localization of underwater objects using sound waves. Quite often, acoustic projectors used in sonar applications are housed inside a chamber, known as a sonar dome. Sonar domes are typically attached to lower front part of ship and used for performing two key operations. First the dome's wall protects the projector against the pressure exerted by the high speed sea water, Hydrostatic pressure, and impact forces attributable to different sea objects. Secondly, dome walls facilitate easy transmission of acoustic waves generated by the projector out into the sea. For this reason, walls of a sonar dome should be ideally acoustically transparent. However, in reality, dome walls should be made up of a material which provides for minimum "insertion loss" for transmission of the acoustic waves. Thus, design of sonar domes requires an exercise in optimization by balancing the conflicting requirements of acoustical transparency and mechanical strength. In this project, we plan to explore and develop a design methodology for a typical sonar dome for ship applications. As a part of this exercise, we plan to explore diverse design parameters such as dome material, thickness of dome's wall, shape of the dome, position of the array in the dome, role of baffle inside the, insertion loss, leakage of external noise into the dome, Anechoic performance, etc.

We attempt to predict chaos in one dof system that consists of a spring with piecewise linear negative and nonlinear cubic stiffness using Melnikov function. The systems is perturbed by a small damping and weak external excitation. To evaluate Melnikov function, we find parametrization of the separatrix in the phase plane of the unperturbed system in a piecewise linear fashion and then find limits of integration, i.e. the times along the separatrix where the governing equation switches due to piecewise linearity. Evaluation of different integrals involved is carried out by contour integration at times.

Research Topic: Wire Electrochemical Machining Wire electrochemical machining (Wire ECM) is an anodic dissolution process in which metal removal takes place atom by atom from the anode (i.e. workpiece). Very thin wires can be used as a cathode (i.e. tool) because of absence of direct contact between tool and the workpiece hence almost no mechanical cutting force and minimal heat generation. Wire ECM is an advancement in this domain for improvement in machining proficiencies to machine high aspect ratio micro-features and miniaturized parts. Lately, optimization of Wire ECM capabilities has been reported for enhancing sludge removal through axial electrolyte flow, using travelling wire electrode, vibration assisted wire electrode, use of carbon fiber electrode and providing ultra-short pulsed current supply.

These compounds can be semiconducting or metallic and even superconducting. The realization of any real life device application of Heusler alloys needs full understanding of the material properties in reduced dimensions besides the bulk properties. In thin film form, it is of paramount interest to study the nature of the interfaces with the substrate. The half-metallic character of Heusler alloys is prone to degrade due to the presence of structural and/or site disorder in thin films.

Research Topic: Over the past two decades, declining agricultural growth and rising cultivation costs have diminished farmers' incomes across India. Moreover, large scale adoption of commercial farming has amplified farmers' credit needs, leading to widespread credit defaults. Consequently, small and marginal Indian farmers have been compelled to borrow largely from informal sources (e.g. moneylenders) at exorbitant interest rates, thus plunging themselves into a relentless debt trap. The acute agrarian distress due to indebtedness and other socio-economic factors has led to an alarming spate of farmers' suicides in several states (e.g. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka) since the mid-1990s, including the prosperous state of Punjab. Although some empirical studies have explored the link between agrarian distress, indebtedness and farmers' suicides for various states, such studies are rare for Punjab. This rigorous empirical study examines the major determinants of growing agrarian distress and indebtedness in Punjab, and analyzes the relationship between farmers' suicides and indebtedness, by using field survey data from Punjab
