About
The Center for Lasers and Photonics (CELP) is an interdisciplinary center of excellence that combines cutting-edge technology from engineering and theoretical advances in science to create new horizons in the field of photonics science and engineering. The faculty in CELP belong to six different parent departments (EE, ME, AE, PHY, CY, and CE) and pursue research in the fields of nanobiophotonics, ultrafast optics, quantum optics and related fields. The Center has research infrastructure worth several crores funded by agencies such as DST, DRDO, CSIR, MHRD etc.
Three PG programmes offered at CELP: PhD , M.Tech and M.S(Research) in Photonics Science and Engineering Programme (PSEP). The aim of PSEP is to train engineers/scientists from diverse background in interdisciplinary activities in photonics and related areas. For details, please visit our admission webpage.
Some of the projects that are currently pursued by CELP students are: Vein imaging, cancerous cell detection, LiDar systems, semiconductor lasers, chaos in fibers, quantum cryptography, photonic crystals, fibre lasers, and particle imaging.
The department coordinates with institute in placement activities for M.Tech and PhD students. Our alumni are working in prestigious organizations such as DRDO, BEL, MathWorks etc. Many of our alumni have chosen to pursue PhD in reputed international and national universities.

Lecture Series
Ramachandra Rao Dasari Distinguished Lecture Series
![]() |
Prof. Ramachandra Rao Dasari is currently the associate director of G.R. Harrison Spectroscopy Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He was at IIT Kanpur for 16 years. In that regime, he built one of the largest Laser laboratories for university research in India in that time, training large number of Ph.D students in laser research and interactions with several R&D laboratories. As Physics panel member of UGC, he has initiated number of new initiatives for improvements in undergraduate education and organized workshops for training of teachers. In order to give respect to his contributions towards IIT Kanpur and the whole world, CELP conducts lecture series every year by inviting prominent scientist in the field of photonics for the same.More details about the lecture series can be found in the link below: Prof. R. Dasari's Lecture Series |
Ph.D Student Seminar Series
CELP organizes departmental postgraduate student seminar every week. Seminar is just like any other formal seminar which give students an opportunity to learn and present themselves. |

Our expertise lies in the areas related to photonics, bio-photonics, imaging, spectroscopy, material processing, optical communication and quantum optics. Being an interdisciplinary research centre we bring together team or individuals that integrate techniques, tools and perspectives from two or more disciplines to advance fundamental understanding or to solve problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of any single discipline or area of research. Our vision is to contribute meaningfully to the world through excellence in scientific education and research, and furthermore create valuable resource for the society at large.
Faculty profile:
We provide platform for interdisciplinary research on light related technologies, and hence draw faculty from various departments across the institute including Aerospace Engineering , Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering , Mechanical Engineering and Physics.
Admission Criterion:
M.Tech/MS(Research):
Candidates are shortlisted for a written test conducted by CELP on the basis of GATE score cutoffs. Subsequently, the candidates who clear the written test are chosen to appear for interview. The final selections are made on the basis of GATE score and interview marks.
Ph.D:
The candidates with qualifying degree of M.Tech/ME or equivalent may be called for interview on the basis of percentage marks/CPI cutoffs in qualifying degree. The candidates with master's degree in science or an allied area may be called for interview on the basis of percentage marks/CPI cutoffs in the master's degree if they satisfy each of the following three criteria:
-
a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master's degree,
-
first division in bachelor's degree, and
-
valid JRF/GATE score.
The candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering or science (4 year programme) with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI and a valid GATE score may be called for interview. The final selections are made on the basis of interview marks.
Note:
-
For admission to M.Tech, the requirement of GATE score is waived off for candidates with the B.Tech/B.S (Four Year) degree from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in B.Tech/B.S (Four Year).
-
For admission to Ph.D., the requirement of GATE score is waived for candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs).
