Undergraduate research allows students to engage in original research from the early years, helping them move beyond traditional classroom instruction and become active contributors within their discipline. Pursuing undergraduate research under faculty mentorship can help students foster a deeper understanding of the scientific methodology and cultivate essential professional skills. Many of these undergraduate research efforts also yield conference presentations or peer-reviewed publications, which significantly bolster a student’s profile for graduate admissions or competitive job markets. Undergraduate (B. Tech.) students enrolled in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur are required to complete an undergraduate project (UGP) under the guidance of a faculty member during their final year.
