IIT Kanpur to host 5th National Students' Research Convention


  • The theme of the event is - MedTech and Healthcare: The Welfare of Humanity

Kanpur, February 16, 2023: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has announced the dates and details for the fifth edition of National Students’ Research Convention. A three-day annual event, the 5th National Students’ Research Convention 2023 (NSRC ’23) is set to take place from 3-5 March, 2023 and the theme this year is, ‘MedTech and Healthcare: The Welfare of Humanity’.

NSRC is a flagship event of the Academics and Career Council at IIT Kanpur that serves as a platform for the brightest minds in academia and industry to showcase their cutting-edge research and innovation ideas. It also provides opportunities for students, especially those who showcase their research and innovative work, to gain insight about their field of interest through talks and interactions with industry leaders as well as the faculty.

With this year’s convention focused on the burning topic of medical technology, it has brought together leaders and experts from the field of medicine and technology entrepreneurs spearheaded by Dr. D Nageshwara Reddy, Chairman & Chief of Gastroenterology, Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, Former Principal Scientific Adviser, Government of India, Professor, National Centre for Biological Sciences, TIFR. The lineup of speakers also include prominent names like Dr. Debojyoti Chakraborty, Principal Scientist, CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology; Dr. Anup Singh, Associate Professor, Center for Biomedical Engineering, IIT Delhi; Prof. Amitabh Bandyopadhyay, Professor & Head, Department of Biosciences and Engineering, IIT Kanpur; Prof. Sri Sivakumar, Coordinator & Project Co-Investigator, Centre for Nanosciences, IIT Kanpur and Dr. Kiran Iyer, Scientist, Pfizer Healthcare India Pvt. Ltd.

One of the highlights of the convention also include workshops and this year’s convention is no different. ‘Design Thinking: An Agile Tool for Medical Device Prototyping’, organised by MedTech Laboratories of IIT Kanpur, will be a hands-on training on manufacturing engineering, medical devices manufacturing and rapid manufacturing. It will also feature talks by Prof. J. Ramkumar, Professor & Head of Imagineering Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur and Dr. Amandeep Singh, REO, Imagineering Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur on the subject.

Talking about NSRC ’23, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director IIT Kanpur, said, “The pandemic has emphasized not only the need to have a healthcare system in place, but the important role that technology can play in making it more efficient. There are exciting innovations taking place in this field. This is the reason why medtech is the focus of NSRC ’23 this year. We hope that NSRC’23 will excite our young students.”

NSRC is incomplete if it has no competition and awards involved in it. Students can participate by sending abstracts of their work for different themes. These themes include the following:

  • Biomaterial, Biomechanics, Biofluid-mechanics, Biophysics

  • Medical imaging, Medical devices, Medical instrumentations, Medical sensing & Implant and Personalized medicine

  • Drug Delivery, Cancer Biology, Immuno-engineering, Neuro-engineering, Evolutionary biology and Computational bioengineering
