History

The first computing in academia in India started with IBM 1620 at IIT Kanpur in 1963. Teaching and training in programming took place around it -- about 30 intensive short courses were taught between 1964 and 1975.

Professor Rajaraman's book on Fortran programming was published in this period. The Digital Equipment Company (DEC)'s computer DEC-1090 arrived in the 70s and was the backbone of computing for 8-10 years.

The first MTech program in Computer Science was started in 1972 as an interdisciplinary program. The fi rst batch of BTech students was admitted in 1978 and graduated in 1983. An independent department of Computer Science and Engineering began in 1984 in the Computer Center building. The department moved to its fi rst alumnus-funded building, the H.R. Kadim Diwan building in 2002. The Rajeev Motwani building, in the name of a late distinguished alumnus and funded by his family, was inaugurated in the summer of 2014."
