M. Tech

The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or any of the other additional eligible branches for admission to respective streams of the department, as noted below in **Note) with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have the required qualification are eligible to apply irrespective of the marks/CPI. A valid GATE score is needed (Candidates applying to a particular stream, must have a valid GATE score in ME or other eligible branches of engineering, as noted below in **Note). The GATE requirement is waived for the B. Tech. graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B. Tech. However, such students are not entitled to Institute Assistantship if overall CPI is below 8.0.

** Note: The minimum qualification for admission to the M.Tech. program in different streams is a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or in any of the following branches for different streams of the department (GATE scores are required in any of the respective eligible branches only, as per the specific stream requirements, as noted below).

  • Manufacturing Sciences:  Aero Engg, Chem Engg,  Metallurgy/MatSc Engg, Prod/Manuf Engg.
  • Fluid and Thermal Sciences:  Aero Engg, Chem Engg.
  • Solid Mechanics and Design:  Aero Engg, Civil Engg,  Metallurgy/MatSc Engg, Chem Engg.
  • Robotics and Automation:  Aero Engg, Comp Sc, Elect/Electro/Comm Engg, Mechatronics/Instrum Engg.

PhD

Admissions are made twice a year, in July and December. The minimum qualification for admission to the Ph.D. program is a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University with minimum percentage/CPI specified by the Institute. In exceptional cases, candidates with B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Master's degree in other branches of Engineering and Sciences with minimum percentage/CPI specified by the Institute will be considered. However, outstanding applicants holding a Bachelor's degree in Engineering with not less than 75% marks or a CPI of 7.5 may also be considered for admission. For more details please see here. Interview/written test will be conducted by the department and the admissions will be made as per the set of rules laid down by IIT Kanpur.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant must have a master's degree in engineering/technology with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum, or a bachelor's degree in engineering or science (4 year program) with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI, or master's degree in science or an allied area, satisfying each of the following criteria:
(a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master's degree,
(b) first division in bachelor's degree, and
(c) JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE.

However, a valid GATE score is needed for the candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering, if they have not graduated from a CFTI (centrally funded technical institute).

External registration program for PhD A candidate working in an R&D establishment which is equipped with the necessary research and library facilities may be considered for admission only to the PhD programs in engineering. Such a candidate must be sponsored by his/her employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring organization for at least 2 years at the time of admission. The employer must expressly undertake to pay full salary to the candidate and relieve him/her to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to complete his/her residence requirement. A candidate applying for admission to the external registration program must provide detailed information about the research facilities available at his/her organization and a certificate that these would be available to him/her for carrying out research. He/she should also provide the biodata of the prospective supervisor who would supervise the candidate's work at his/her organization. An application for admission from a candidate working in the approved organization will be considered only if he/she wishes to work in the specified area.
