The workshop brings together educators from diverse disciplines to explore the systematic integration of Artificial Intelligence into teaching, learning, and assessment.

Kanpur, 26 Oct 2026: The Centre for Educational Research and Teaching Excellence (CERTEX), Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), organised a workshop on "AI in Higher Education" in collaboration with Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, and Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur.

The workshop brought together three prominent institutions of higher learning in Uttar Pradesh to deliberate on the opportunities, challenges, and emerging practices associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education. The workshop started with addresses by the Director, IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Agrawal; the Vice Chancellor, BHU, Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi; the Vice Chancellor, CSJMU, Prof. Vinay Pathak; and the Professor-in-Charge, CERTEX, Prof. Manoj K. Harbola.

With AI increasingly influencing various aspects of teaching and learning, educators are exploring ways to incorporate these technologies into their academic practices. While many teachers have begun using AI tools individually, their approaches and applications often vary. The workshop was conceived to facilitate the exchange of ideas, share diverse experiences, and explore ways to make the application of AI in higher education more systematic, effective, and responsible. The convener planning committee for the workshop had Dr Aditya Jagannatham (CERTEX, Convener), Dr Manoj K. Harbola (CERTEX), Dr C. S. Upadhyay (CERTEX), Dr Rajat Mittal (Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur), Dr Sana Khanum (Chemical Engineering, IIT Kanpur), Dr Vimal Singh (Education, CSJMU), Dr Manjari Gupta (CS, BHU), and Dr Prateek Chaurasia (Education, BHU).

The workshop featured two open-mic sessions of 45 minutes each, followed by a one-hour panel discussion, providing a total of two and a half hours for interaction and deliberation. The discussions centred on three key themes: AI in the Classroom, Assessment in the Age of AI, and Ethics in AI.

The open-mic sessions provided participants with a platform to share their experiences, perspectives, concerns, and innovative ideas on integrating AI into educational practices. The panel discussion further enabled an in-depth exploration of the evolving role of AI in academic environments, including its implications for classroom engagement, assessment methodologies, and ethical considerations.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation, with attendees engaging in thought-provoking discussions that made the sessions interactive and lively. A distinctive feature of the workshop was the participation of educators from diverse educational fields. This multidisciplinary representation enriched the deliberations and offered an opportunity to examine the application of AI in higher education from varied academic and pedagogical perspectives.

CERTEX, IIT Kanpur, recognised the need to organise such a workshop and undertook this initiative to highlight the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing among higher education institutions as they navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence. By bringing together educators from IIT Kanpur, BHU, and CSJMU, the workshop provided a valuable platform to exchange ideas and collectively reflect on approaches to meaningfully integrating AI into teaching, learning, and assessment.

The workshop underscored the need for continued dialogue among educators and

institutions to develop informed, systematic, and ethically grounded approaches to the use of AI in higher education.
