Project Postdoctoral Fellow

Project Postdoctoral Fellow - ElecTroDES Lab

The Electrochemistry and Transport for Design of Energy Systems (ElecTroDES) Lab at IIT Kanpur invites applications for the position of Project Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of scalable fabrication and characterization of electrodes for water electrolyzers and other electrochemical hydrogen systems.

The selected candidate will lead experimental work on the fabrication of catalyst layers and electrodes for the lab's in-house electrolyzers using scalable coating methods (e.g., doctor blade and slot-die coating). The work covers catalyst ink formulation, MEA fabrication, cell assembly, and electrochemical & physical characterization.

Position Overview

  • Position: Project Postdoctoral Fellow (Scalable Fabrication & Characterization of Electrodes)
  • Nature of Appointment: Purely temporary & contractual; initial appointment for 1 year (extendable based on performance & project requirements)
  • Pay-Scale: ₹60,000 - ₹5,000 - ₹85,000 (Actual pay based on skills & experience)
  • Research Lab: ElecTroDES Lab, IIT Kanpur

Essential Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a closely related discipline (focused on electrochemical devices).
  • Excellent academic credentials and research record.
  • Hands-on experience in device-level electrode fabrication (doctor blade, slot-die, spray coating) and catalyst ink formulation.
  • Demonstrated skills in cell/MEA assembly and electrochemical testing (polarization curves, EIS, durability testing).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PEM, anion exchange membrane (AEM), or alkaline water electrolyzers.
  • Experience with ink rheology and colloidal characterization (viscosity, particle size, dispersion stability).
  • Hands-on experience with material characterization (SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, BET, profilometry, porosimetry).
  • Experience with coating scale-up (larger-area electrodes, roll-to-roll, or ultrasonic spray).
  • Strong record of publications or patents in electrode or MEA fabrication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish reproducible, well-documented fabrication processes for electrolyzer electrodes.
  • Set up experimental protocols in a newly established laboratory.
  • Train and guide graduate students and mentor junior researchers.
  • Work closely with the lab's modeling team to connect fabrication parameters to electrode structure and device performance.
