The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is proud to announce that Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, has been appointed as the Vice‑Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, for a term of three years or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Chaturvedi received his B.Tech. in 1986, M.Tech. in 1988, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1995. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has held several prominent academic and administrative positions. Prof. Chaturvedi also served as the Director of IIT Roorkee from 2017 to 2022 and held additional charges as the Director of Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla from Jan 2017 to Aug 2018 and IIT Mandi from July 2020 to January 2022. Upon completing his term at IIT Roorkee, he re-joined IIT Kanpur in his academic role.

Speaking on this significant development, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, stated: “On behalf of the entire IIT Kanpur community, I extend my warmest congratulations to Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. It adds a new feather to the IIT Kanpur’s legacy of fostering academic leaders who go on to shape the future of higher education in India”

Prof. Chaturvedi’s research contributions span the areas of communication theory and wireless communications, particularly in waveform shaping, sequence design, and MIMO systems. He has been conferred with several accolades including INSA Teacher Award, IIT Kanpur Distinguished Teacher Award, and the Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship at NTU, Singapore. In 2023, he was conferred the Institute Fellow Award by IIT Kanpur in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and academic leadership.
