Information for PG Admission in Civil Engineering for 2026-27-I Semester
- All applicants must apply through the IIT Kanpur admission portal at: https://www.iitk.ac.in/doaa/pgadmission/

- Additional eligibility criteria, shortlisting criteria, admission procedure, written test syllabus (if applicable) and dates for written test/interview, for admission to the different PG programs in Civil Engineering, are given below.

Candidates with a valid GATE score
An online interview for shortlisted candidates (based on category-wise GATE cutoffs) will be scheduled between 25 and 27 April 2026. Direct admissions may be offered to applicants with exceptionally high GATE scores in CE, CH, and ES.
Candidates from IITs, with or without a valid GATE score
Candidates currently pursuing (or who have completed) a B.Tech. degree in Civil / Environment / Mechanical / Chemical / Agricultural Engineering or in a related Engineering branch from an IIT, and who do not have a valid GATE score or with a GATE score lower than the category-wise cutoff of GATE scores, but who have an overall CPI of at least 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years, are also eligible to appear in the online interviews.
Candidates who satisfy the above-mentioned criteria in addition to the minimum eligibility requirements specified at https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pgadmission/eligibility-requirement.php will be notified through call letters before the interview dates.
** For MTech in Structural Engineering
Candidates who applied for MTech in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur with Structural Engineering as first preference and with valid GATE score greater than or equal to the category-wise GATE score (given below), are eligible to appear for the written qualifying test. IIT graduates in Civil Engineering with an overall CPI greater than or equal to 8.0 are also eligible to appear for the written test. These are program-specific eligibility criteria in addition to the minimum eligibility published online (https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pgadmission/eligibility-requirement.php).

Written test details:
For the eligible candidates, the written qualifier test will be conducted in person on 26th of April 2026 (Sunday) over a duration of 2 hours. Tentatively, the exam will start at 11 AM. You must bring your own calculator along with pens, pencils, and erasers.
Syllabus for written test:
Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, and Structural Analysis, in line with the GATE 2026 Civil Engineering syllabus.
Candidates who satisfy the above-mentioned eligibility criteria in addition to the minimum eligibility requirements specified at https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pgadmission/eligibility-requirement.php, will receive a call letter for appearing in the written qualifying test at the earliest.
Important Notes:
- Passing the written test is necessary for admission in MTech Structural Engineering. The final merit list will be prepared based on GATE and written test scores.
- Reporting time for document verification will be at least 3 hours before the written exam.
- No accommodation will be provided on campus. The candidates must arrange for their own accommodation depending on the travel schedule.
- IIT Kanpur campus is connected to various parts of Kanpur city via the metro. Service details can be obtained at: https://kanpur.upmetrorail.com/.
*** For MTech in Transportation Engineering
Candidate with GATE score
Students who applied for M.Tech. in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur with Transportation Engineering as first preference and with valid GATE score (Code: CE/ME/AE) greater than or equal to the category-wise GATE score (given below), are eligible to appear in the written qualifying test.

Candidates from IITs with or without GATE score

- A printout/soft copy of the call letter (or Email whichever is applicable).
- Original government issued identity card containing your photo (photocopies will not be accepted).
- Original degree and mark certificates of all qualifying examinations
- Score card of GATE/CEED/Other National Level Examination (if applicable)

FAQs for PG Admissions
Q. Can the dates of written-test/interview be changed?
A: The dates for written-test/interviews cannot be changed.
Q. My name appears in the list of shortlisted candidates available on the website, but I have not received any email.
A: It may be possible that your email account has a spam filter or other email blocking applications. Please check, and if it is not the case, write to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following details: application number, name, category and specializations for which you have been shortlisted but not received the email.
Q. How to reach the examination venue?
A: Please refer to the maps and admission schedule provided with the call letter. In case of doubt, please clarify directions from the security guards of IIT Kanpur. These guards are present near road junctions and at entrances of buildings.
Q. Can I be late for the written test/interview?
A: No. Please strictly follow the reporting time mentioned in your call letter. Being late to report during the written examination/interview may lead to your disqualification.
Q. When will the results be informed to me?
A: Usually, it takes about 2-3 weeks after the completion of the written test/interview to complete all the procedures and send the offer letter for admission. Offer letters are sent by email, where all details about the acceptance of offers are provided.
