RISE @ IITK is a research internship programme that provides meritorious international students with an opportunity to work closely with faculty members at IIT Kanpur.
The programme comprises two internship modules:
Winter Internship
- Duration: 4 weeks
- Tentative Period: December
- Mode: Virtual
- Eligibility: International students enrolled in Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes at their home university.
- Support: No stipend. Students are required to have access to reliable high-speed internet.
- Application: Students may apply for a maximum of two projects.
- Selection: Based on academic record, CV, Statement of Purpose, recommendation letter and project-specific requirements. Faculty may conduct interviews or additional screening.
- Students who successfully complete the Winter Internship may receive preference for the subsequent Summer Internship selection.
Summer Internship
- Duration: 6–8 weeks
- Tentative Period: May–July
- Mode: In-person at IIT Kanpur
- Eligibility: International students enrolled in Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes who meet the academic and project-specific requirements.
- Support: Selected students may receive a stipend, shared accommodation and local transportation support, as per the programme provisions for the respective year.
- Students are generally required to bear their travel, visa, food and health insurance expenses.
Eligibility
Applicants should:
- Be non-Indian nationals.
- Be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at their home university.
- Have a strong academic record and an interest in research.
- Have at least one semester remaining in their programme after completion of the internship.
- Meet the eligibility requirements of the selected project.
- Be comfortable communicating in English.
Additional academic requirements may apply depending on the internship module and project.
Application Process
Students are required to apply through the online application form during the respective application period.
Applicants may apply for a maximum of two projects. Multiple applications by the same student may be rejected.
The selection process may include document evaluation, faculty interaction, video interview or other screening methods, as determined by the respective faculty member.

- Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member/supervisor
- Passport-size photograph
