Prime 83

An innovation is worthless until it gets recognition and impact masses. Remarkable and outstanding innovations make our life better and eventually help in the development of a brighter and smarter future. Entrepreneurs can bring a difference in the lives of many others through their future-oriented innovative products and services provided they get proper guidance, support and resources. Promote, Research, Innovation, Mentoring and Entrepreneurship (PRIME’83) is an initiative of 1983 batch of IIT Kanpur to provide support to the technopreneurs on their journey to success. The program was launched in November 2012 with the aim to promote innovation and entrepreneurship by supporting enthusiastic student innovators and entrepreneurs in the campus.

The SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) and the Office of Dean of Resources and Alumni of IIT Kanpur have joined hands to facilitate this initiative. Alumni of IIT K 1983 batch not only provide monetary support but also spare some of their valuable time to mentor the student innovators and entrepreneurs. They inspire them by sharing their own experiences, turning points and accomplishments. The batch coordinates PRIME’83 activities under IITK E-Cell.

Under this initiative, PRIME ‘83 Innovation Awards are organized every year to recognize distinguished innovative projects and distribute grant fund of 5 lakhs among them to help them transform their innovation into start-ups creating large scale impact. Entries are invited for innovative and scalable projects by students and alumni offering innovative technological solutions to industrial/social problems existing in our society. The shortlisted projects get mentorship from professors and expert alumni, and incubation facility based on their innovative model. After the successful completion of mentorship, the projects are judged and the winners are rewarded with the cash prize to convert their innovative project into a commercially viable project. The awards have received an overwhelming and enthusiastic response from current and former students. “Alumni are generous and willing to give back! I still can’t forget the meeting with my mentor Rajiv Choudhary at his residence in Delhi. We had it all- hospitality, contacts, tips and tricks and everything,” said Kushang, one of the participants. For the 2015-2016 session, four teams have bene shortlisted that are currently undergoing an intense process of mentorship. These include: Solar Still, Sworlite, Tactical Robots and Krishtnam Technologies.
