H. Ila obtained her Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1968. After being a faculty in chemistry at NEHU, Shillong, she joined the department in 1996.

Synthetic organic chemistry, design and development of new synthetic methods for carbocycles and heterocycles (naturally occurring or unnatural) of biological and commercial interest.
