The Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is one of the premier departments in the country today. The strength of the department has been and continues to be excellence in research and teaching. The faculty of the department is extremely well qualified, and motivated with a strong commitment to teaching and research. The commitment to research is reflected in the large number of projects sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources and Developement, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The alumni of the Department occupy high positions in industry and academia, in India and abroad. Their accomplishments have been outstanding and reflect on the quality training imparted at the undergraduate and graduate level.

  • Prof. Sandeep Verma has been awarded the 'Panjab University Bhagyatara Award 2014'. This award is given for the achievements in research in the area of Organic Chemistry/ Biochemistry/ Pharmaceutical Chemistry/ Dairy Chemistry, to an Indian of below 50 years. It carries a cash prize along with a citation.
  • Dr. Dattatraya H. Dethe and Dr. Pratik Sen have been selected for P. K. Kelkar Research Fellowship (Young Faculty Research fellowships) for a period of three years.
  • Prof. R. Gurunath (Section of Environmental Sciences), Prof. J. N. Moorthy (Section of Materials Sciences) and Prof. Sandeep Verma (Section of Chemical Sciences) have been selected to deliver the Platinum Jubilee Lecture at the 103rd Indian Science Congress to be held at University of Mysore, Mysuru, during January 3-7, 2016. The Platinum Jubilee Lectures were initiated in 1988 to commemorate 75th year of the inception of Indian Science Congress Association.
