Powder Metallurgy

IIT Kanpur has been at the forefront of Powder Metallurgy since decades. Powder metallurgy is known as a net-shape process which can be utilized for fabricating intricate shapes from metals as well as ceramics, bypassing the need to use secondary processes, thereby reducing costs.

Powder metallurgy is the only route for manufacturing of components from cermets which is a composite of ceramics and metals. Hence, all cutting and abrasive tools are manufactured using this technology. Powder metallurgy method is also used for manufacturing many intricate defense and aerospace components. Research at IITK focuses on understanding the effect of sintering on the consolidation behavior of various ceramics and alloys, and in turn, effect on their properties.
