Dr. Shahid Jameel

Dr. Shahid Jameel is an Indian virologist and academic. He is the Director, Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University, Haryana. Known for his research in hepatitis E virus, Dr. Jameel is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 2000.




Profile

Dr. Shahid Jameel completed his Bachelor of Science from Aligarh Muslim University in 1977 and earned a master's degree from IIT Kanpur in 1979. After earning his doctorate from the Washington State University in 1984, he did his post-doctoral work on molecular virology at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 1984-1987, and later joined the the institute as an assistant professor at the division of rheumatology. Upon his return to Indian in 1988, he joined the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) where he established the Virology Research Group. He continued his research at ICGEB as a senior scientist and the head of the virology research group for around 25 years. Mr. Jameel has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Wellcome trust DBT Indian Alliance.
