IITK-Motorsports
IITK Motorsports is a team of passionate, driven, and dedicated students united by the goal of building a 'Racecar'. Comprising members from diverse departments and years, the team thrives on exploring and learning in the automotive domain. Founded in 2010 by students eager to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering, the team has competed in prestigious events like Formula Student Italy, Formula Bharat, SUPRA, and Mega ATV Championship since 2011. Most recently, at Formula Imperial 2024, IITK Motorsports emerged as the Overall EV Champions and once again brought pride and honour to the institute.
Development in the FY 2024-25
The team was committed to designing and building a top-performing electric vehicle for Formula Bharat, focusing on optimizing performance to maximize points while also upgrading their car from the previous tenure for Formula Imperial. Each component, from the accumulator to the suspension and braking systems, was carefully designed, tested, and integrated.
Advanced tools such as SolidWorks for 3D design, OptimumLap for performance simulation, and ANSYS for structural and aerodynamic analysis were used. Lotus Shark and MATLAB supported suspension analysis, while Altium Designer and MicroCap were used for electronics and circuit design. These tools enabled data-driven optimization and ensured a competitive vehicle.
The team has built two Formula Student electric vehicles and achieved several milestones, including:
- Overall EV Champions, Formula Imperial 2024
- Best Innovation and Best Engineering Design Awards, Formula Imperial 2024
- 1st Place Overall, Formula Bharat 2023 (Virtual)
- 9th Place, Formula Bharat 2025
The team is currently developing its third electric vehicle with further improvements and innovations.
The project provided students with valuable hands-on engineering experience and strengthened IIT Kanpur’s presence in national and international competitions. It also promoted sustainable mobility and inspired innovation within the campus community.
