About Us

The Center for Lasers and Photonics (CELP) is an interdisciplinary center of excellence that combines cutting-edge technology from engineering and theoretical advances in science to create new horizons in the field of photonics science and engineering. The faculty in CELP belong to six different parent departments (EE, ME, AE, PHY, CY, and CE) and pursue research in the fields of nanobiophotonics, ultrafast optics, quantum optics and related fields. The Center has research infrastructure worth several crores funded by agencies such as DST, DRDO, CSIR, MHRD etc.

Photonics Science and Engineering Programme (PSEP) is an interdisciplinary postgraduate (PG) Program offered by the Centre for Lasers and Photonics (CELP). The aim of PSEP is to train engineers/scientists in interdisciplinary activities in photonics The M.Tech programme runs for 4 semesters and includes both course work and a thesis component. Course work includes mandatory courses and electives that students can opt for in consultation with the convener of the PSEP. Students also complete a 2 semester thesis with one of the CELP faculty as part of their M.Tech degree in photonics domain. A unique part of M.Tech experience at CELP is a course on laboratory techniques that provides students with an opportunity to learn hands-on experimental skills in photonics.

The students are admitted to the M.Tech program depending on the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score. The students are also admitted under the sponsored category subject to selection through the interview process. The requirement of GATE score is waived off for the candidates with the B Tech/BS (Four Year) degree from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in B Tech/BS (Four Year). The detailed eligibility criteria of the M.Tech program are listed on IITK Admissions Page

Photonics Science and Engineering Programme (PSEP) is an interdisciplinary postgraduate Program offered by the Centre for Lasers and Photonics (CELP). The aim of PSEP is to train engineers/scientists in interdisciplinary activities in photonics. The PhD program includes both course work and a thesis component. Course work includes mandatory courses and electives that students can opt for in consultation with thesis supervisor and Departmental Postgraduate Committee (DPGC) Convener. The PhD program significantly contributes to the departmental research work.

Students are either admitted through M. Tech/M.E. or after B. Tech/B.E. The candidate having a B.E/B.Tech or a MSc degree should have a valid GATE or JRF score in order to apply for PhD admissions. However, GATE score is exempted for candidates having B. Tech degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTI) candidates. All the candidates have to go through the interview process in order to be selected for the PhD program. PhD students are also admitted under Quality Improvement Program (QIP) subject to selection through an interview process. The detailed eligibility criteria of the PhD program are listed on the IITK Admissions Page

The Centre for Lasers and Photonics (CELP) is an interdisciplinary centre of excellence that combines cutting-edge technology from engineering and theoretical advances in science to create new horizons in the field of photonics science and engineering. The faculty in CELP belong to different parent departments (EE, ME, AE, PHY, CY, and CE) and pursue research in the fields of nanophotonics, biophotonics, ultrafast optics, quantum optics, imaging, optical communication, optoelectronics, spectroscopy and related areas. The Centre has research infrastructure worth several crores funded by agencies such as DST, DRDO, CSIR, MHRD etc.

Three PG programmes offered at CELP: PhD , M.Tech and M.S(Research) in Photonics Science and Engineering Programme (PSEP). The aim of PSEP is to train engineers/scientists from diverse background in interdisciplinary activities in photonics and related areas. For details, please visit our Academics webpage.

Some of the projects that are currently pursued by CELP students are: Vein imaging, cancerous cell detection, LiDar systems, semiconductor lasers, chaos in fibers, quantum cryptography, photonic crystals, fibre lasers, and particle imaging.

The department coordinates with institute in placement activities for M.Tech and PhD students. Our alumni are working in prestigious organizations such as DRDO, BEL, MathWorks etc. Many of our alumni have chosen to pursue PhD in reputed international and national universities.
