IIT Kanpur Students

Excerpts from the IITK UG manual

8.5 Permission to Proceed to other Institutions

In order to help a student to broaden his/her horizon and gain course/work experience, he/she may be permitted to proceed to other academic institutions in India or abroad as a non-degree student. The following guidelines and procedures apply for this purpose: A student who satisfies the minimum eligibility conditions given below may spend up to two semesters and/or two summer terms in any academic institution of repute in India or abroad with prior permission of SUGC.

Eligibility

  • Completion of 200 credits of course work,

  • CPI of at least 7.0,

Procedure

The student shall make an application to SUGC through the concerned DUGC, giving details of the proposed programme and shall submit a statement of purpose with sufficient information about the institution where he/she has chosen to spend time as a non-degree student. The DUGC shall examine the student's proposal to determine whether the proposed programme is of a nature that the student will benefit from the exposure. Any application for waiver of credits at IIT Kanpur or transfer of credits from the other institution shall be decided in accordance with the procedure given below. On the recommendation of the DUGC, SUGC may approve the proposal and grant permission, with leave of absence, to the student to proceed as a non-degree student to the selected institution

Transfer of Credits and Waiver in-lieu thereof

Permission to proceed to another institution as a non-degree student does not imply that the student will automatically get waiver from the academic and other requirements of his/her ongoing undergraduate programme at the Institute. However, on return, he/she may apply for waiver with an official transcript of the grades obtained by him/her at the selected institution as a non-degree student and other documents/material that the concerned DUGC may require for evaluation. The DUGC will determine, by whatever means it deems fit, the equivalent courses (credits) and/or requirements for which the student may be given a waiver in his/her undergraduate programme at the Institute. On the recommendation of the DUGC, SUGC may allow a student waiver for a maximum of 100 credits in-lieu of his/her successful completion of the programme elsewhere as a non-degree student. Against each course or requirement for which a waiver is granted, the grade 'W' would appear on the Grade Report with an explanatory note that it stands for waiver granted due to courses taken and/or work done at the elected institution elsewhere. All such courses and/or requirements will be deemed to carry zero credits for SPI/CPI calculations. Under no conditions, the grades earned at any other institution shall appear on the Grade Report. Those students who are selected by the Institute, using prescribed rules and procedures, to proceed on any Institutional Exchange Programme will also be governed by this clause for the transfer of academic credits, waiver, etc.

The semester(s) spent as a non-degree student will be counted for the purpose of evaluating academic performance (Clause 7 of the UG manual).

PERMISSION TO PROCEED TO OTHER ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS AS NON-DEGREE STUDENTS

In order to help-students broaden their horizons and enrich their cultural and academic experience, provision to proceed to other academic and research institutions in India or abroad as nondegree students is available. Rules and procedures to be followed for availing this provision are as follows:

  • An M.Tech. or a PhD student who satisfies the minimum conditions laid down in para (ii) below may proceed to another academic institution in India or abroad with prior permission of the SPGC on the recommendation of the DPGC.

  • Only those postgraduate students who have spent at least two semesters and have a CPI of at least 8.0 are eligible to proceed as non-degree students elsewhere.

  • For permission to spend time as a non-degree student elsewhere, an eligible student will make an application to the SPGC through the DPGC, duly supported by a statement of purpose to undertake the proposed work and sufficient information about the department/institution for the purposes of para (iv) below.

  • The DPGC will consider the student's application and will determine if the proposed programme of work is of such a nature that waiver for at least 7 units per regular semester or 4 units per summer term is possible. The SPGC may approve the application on the recommendation of the DPGC. In all such cases, the student will be informed about the requirements he/she must fulfill to apply for academic credit on his/her return.

  • Permission to proceed to an institution as a non-degree student does not imply that the student will automatically get any waiver from the academic requirements of IIT Kanpur.

  • The student after completion of the work, will apply for waiver from requirements of his/her programme at IIT Kanpur supported by an official transcript of the grades obtained and whatever material the DPGC may require for the purpose given in para (vii) below.

  • The concerned DPGC will evaluate the work done by the student and will make recommendations to the SPGC after determining by whatever means it deems fit, the equivalent IIT Kanpur courses/requirements for which the student may be given a waiver.

  • On the recommendation of the DPGC, the SPGC may allow the waiver for a maximum of 16 units. Against each requirement for which a waiver is granted, a W would appear on the transcript with an explanatory note that W stands for waiver for work done at the Institution concerned. All such requirements will be deemed to carry zero weight for SPI/CPI calculations.

  • The minimum residence requirement for the students who avail of this provision will remain unchanged for PhD students but may be reduced by one semester for M. Tech. students, provided they spend at least one semester of 16 weeks duration or two quarters of at least 11 weeks duration each as non-degree students elsewhere with prior permission.

  • Those students who are selected by the Institute using a Senate-prescribed procedure to proceed on any institutional exchange programme, except for the students going under the DAAD fellowship programme, will also have to go through the procedure and rules for the transfer of credits as outlined in paras (vi), (vii), (viii) and (ix) above.

6.2 PERMISSION TO PROCEED FOR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The PG students can be permitted to proceed for academic activities outside IITK to carry out field work, library work, computational work, experimental work, and Lab works, and also to attend conference, courses and to undertake other research work etc. as recommended by the department. Permission for a duration upto 30 days be sanctioned by the department with an intimation to SPGC and more than 30 days by the Chairperson- SPGC on the recommendation of the Department.

The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management (ISOM) at the University of Florida (UF), Gainesville, extends a warm welcome to bright undergraduate students from IIT Kanpur to pursue their PhD in Management Information Systems or Operations Management. After the completion of their PhDs, students from the program have joined management schools within the United States and around the world. Thanks to the burgeoning interest in areas such as business analytics, cloud computing and Big Data, the desire to complete a degree in MIS is at an all-time high and thus the demand for qualified faculty to instruct in such courses is also very high. Fresh PhDs are often attracting salaries in excess of $150,000 from business schools.

The mission of the PhD Program is to educate scholars who will make substantial contributions in their field of research. Our primary goal is to train graduate students to make such contributions. To achieve this goal, the faculty in the department of ISOM attempt to place students in productive academic research environments. This means that the PhD students within the department are actively involved in research from their very first semester, and are encouraged to work with the faculty from early on. We have a very collegial atmosphere within the department, and so the PhD students can freely walk into the room of any faculty member to discuss their research. The program currently offers a stipend of just above $30,000 a year (in addition to fringe benefits such as health insurance), which is more than adequate for a comfortable life in a college town like Gainesville.

If the idea of doing independent research in a dynamic environment sounds exciting, you are encouraged to go through more details here at Web. You can review the information packet there to learn more. Further details regarding prerequisites, curriculum and admission requirements can also be found from the website Web (including details of the current faculty - several of whom are from different IITs and one of whom is from IIT Kanpur! - and their research interests), and you are always welcome to contact us directly. We are looking for students with very strong foundations in mathematics (a look at the curriculum in the initial years will give you an idea about the kind of background we are looking for) and an interest in conducting novel research in information systems and operations management.

Characterization of suspension plasma sprayed coatings

Duration: May –July 2014 Location: Production Technology Centre (PTC), Trollhättan, Sweden Organization: Production Technology West (PTW), University West

Who we are?

The research team PTW is a part of University West located at Sweden's most modern laboratory PTCworking in close collaboration with manufacturing industry. For details, please visit the website http://www.ptw.hv.se/ .

Project description

Suspension Plasma Spraying (SPS) is coating deposition technique in which a suspension with particles in sub-micrometre to nanometre range is used as a precursor to deposit coatings. This process is well suited for the deposition of materials with high melting points due to the large amount of heat generated, like ceramics. The major applications for SPS coatings include Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). In addition to being introduced to the SPS process, the project work consists of characterisation of SPS coatings fabricated for the applications mentioned above. The characterisation work will include sample preparation, mounting and polishing to analyse microstructure with techniques like optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The materials present in the coating will be analysed by Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD).

Summary

The programme is designed for potential/current Ph. D. Students to be executed in the following modes.

Mode I: Those who have/are graduated/graduating from IIT Kanpur can apply for a Ph. D. position at the University of Melbourne. The students will be registered at UOM and the degree will be awarded by UOM. However, they have to have a Co-supervisor from IIT Kanpur. Such students can do their part of research at IIT Kanpur, or the IITK Supervisor can visit UOM briefly. Supervisors at Melbourne and IITK and the student would stay connected through, say skype or e-mail on a regular basis.

Mode II: This mode is for students doing Ph. D. at IITK. Again, the student will be guided by supervisors from both Universities. The student shall visit UOM for a brief period (e.g., a semester) to conduct a part of her/his research there. IITK Supervisor may also visit UOM. The degree in Mode II will be awarded by IITK.
