From the Editor's Desk

Dear Readers,

WELCOME to the latest edition of Avant Garde !!

As academic year draws close and GD/PI round the corner, we at IIT Kanpur are preparing for the arrival of yet another batch of aspirants who have embarked on a journey to materialize their dreams. We hope that they succeed in their endeavor. With this hope for the future, here at AG, we focus on a few of the positives that have occured over the past year.

As the world trains its eyes on the recent developments of the Arab world and the importance of governments and markets, Nabarun Sengupta discusses their role in managing growth in emerging economies. This issue carries the first part of his essay which describes the unique aspects, constraints, challenges and socio-political context of emerging economies.

Manu Agrawal looks back at his life before MBA @ IIT Kanpur and brings to us the complete picture of Anti-Money Laundering. In this issue he explains the history, process and various ways of money laundering. Next issue will deal with methods for identifying fraudulent transactions. Prashant Jain discusses the state of Indian democracy and classifies people into powerful commons and common class. Arun Karthik B. opines on the approach adopted by India Inc. to the emerging market segments of the rural hinterland. Finatics is the annual financial management conclave of MBA, IIT Kanpur and the organizing committee of Finatics’11 introduces us to this year’s theme and events.
