UG/ PG Admission

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at IIT Kanpur offers BS-MS and M.Sc programmes in Mathematics and Statistics. Admission to the BS/BS-MS programme is through the Joint Entrance Examination. The performance of a candidate in this examination will form the basis for admission to the Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programs (entry at the 10+2 level). The Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) is conducted for admission to M.Sc. (Four Semesters) at IITs. Admission to the M.Sc(Mathematics) and M.Sc(Statistics) programme are purely based on the performance in JAM. Ph.D. Admissions: Academic Session 2017 – 18 (Semester- II)

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at IIT Kanpur offers separate Ph.D. programs in Mathematics and Statistics. The Ph.D programme at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics has evolved over the years into an extensive 5-year training and research programme. Applications from candidates with a Master's degree and any of the national-level Ph.D fellowships like, INSPIRE, CSIR-NET, GATE, NBHM, PMRF, etc. are accepted. Eligible applicant's are then called for a written exam based on basic topics taught at the Master's level across various universities and colleges in India. The students who do well in the written test are then shortlisted for an interview to assess their subjective background and maturity to undertake research. Candidate who exhibit a satisfactory performance are selected.

At present there are 56 Ph.D scholars enrolled in the Mathematics and Statistics department.

 


Faculty recruitment: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, invites applications for faculty positions from bright and promising candidates in all areas of mathematics and statistics. Applicants with areas of interest that are related to the research groups here are strongly encouraged to apply.

The recruitment process involves discusssion of the appropriateness of the application to the research groups here, along with an assessment of the candidate's publications by the different groups. If the candidate's application is found suitable then he/she is invited for a talk along with interaction with the faculty here. Only after there has been positive feedback from the department, is the candidate's application processed further for discussion at the institute level. The applicants are then short-listed for an interview based on the recommendations of the department and the institute level committee. The final selecetion is made by a selection committee consisting of experts.

The department has 39 faculty, 4 post-docs and 2 inspire faculty currently.
