Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility (EMI/EMC) & Electrical Safety Test Facility
Welcome to the world-class NABL accredited EMI/EMC (Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility) and Electrical Safety Test Facility, situated in the Diamond Jubilee Academic Complex of IIT Kanpur. Established in 2019 with major funding from BIRAC, the facility operates under the leadership of Project Investigator Prof. Dr. M. Jaleel Akhtar, a renowned researcher with over 20 years of expertise in electromagnetic theory and RF technology.
The facility got NABL accreditation in 2024 for full compliance testing in accordance with relevant IEC/ISO Standards. Our advanced EMC facility includes a 3 meter Semi Anechoic Chamber, Control Room, Amplifier Room, and other accessories to facilitate fully automated EMC testing of electrical and electronic devices with prime emphasis on medical devices, in strict compliance with the relevant IEC and CISPR standards. The safety test facility includes a modern electrical safety analyzer and various other instruments for safety testing of medical electrical devices, in compliance with the relevant IEC standards.
The EMI/EMC issue is quite challenging for the electrical and electronic devices, especially those used in the medical industry, because of the human health risk involved in addition to the regulatory EM compliance. At present, there are very few certified EMI/EMC and electrical safety facilities to test electronic devices in general and medical gadgets in particular in this part of the region. The EMC testing of medical devices is presently not given due consideration in the country primarily due to non-availability of EMI/EMC testing facility at an affordable price, and lack of awareness of the EMI/EMC and electrical safety issue among the medical professionals and the product developers. The EMI/EMC and safety test facility at IIT Kanpur is unique in the country to test medical electrical devices for their electromagnetic compliance, and their electrical safety at an affordable price. The development of such kind of facility in the country is quite significant in today’s scenario, as various agencies including start-ups and small-scale industries are trying to develop new electronic devices and gadgets for medical applications. This facility at IIT Kanpur to facilitate testing of electrical and electronic devices including medical devices at an affordable price would encourage entrepreneurship among the academic fraternity, and it would also help the start-up initiatives in the country.
The facility is now fully functional, and it provides pre-compliance and full-compliance EMC and safety tests of all types of electrical and electronic devices including medical devices as per IEC60601-1-2, IEC 60601-1, IEC 61000-4-3, IEC 61010-1, CISPR 11, CISPR 14, CISPR 15, CISPR 32, CISPR 35 and other relevant standards.
The EMI/EMC and electrical safety test facility at IIT Kanpur also conducts various workshops and short courses at regular intervals to sensitize medical professionals, product designers as well as the academic community about the significance of EMI/EMC testing.
