Shri Sanjay Malhotra is the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India since December 2024.
Shri Malhotra his B. Tech in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and his Masters in Public Policy from Princeton University, United States. In his very first attempt, he topped the Civil Services Exam, 1989 and joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1990.
He served in various capacities in the Government of Rajasthan and Government of India, besides having a stint in the United Nations. While he was Principal Secretary,in-charge of Energy Department in Rajasthan, Mr. Malhotra was instrumental in appointment of distribution franchisees in four towns, introduction of PPP in transmission and innovations in metering, billing and collection. As Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power and later as Chairman and Managing Director of REC Limited, he dealt with transmission, distribution, reforms and restructuring and was deeply involved in policy initiatives and privatization of distribution utilities of Union Territories. He served as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Financial Services and Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, and was instrumental in implementing a number of reforms.
