Interfan area >> Geomorphology >>Drainage Network

Based on the differences in channel pattern for the northern plains of Bihar, distinct morphological areas can be identified. A dendritic channel pattern with high angles of tributary convergence is typical of the erosional terrain of the high mountains and foothills, north of the Himalaya front. On the alluvial plains, the Gandak and Kosi megafans can be distinguished by their divergent channel patterns and the subtle positive topography shown by the contours. The Ganga defines a main zone of axial flow. The interfan area between the Gandak and Kosi megafans divided into amn ‘upstream interfan area’ of gently converging rivers that flow, on average, perpendicular to the mountain front, and a ‘downstream interfan area’ where the more sinuous channels of the Burhi Gandak, Baghmati and Kamla-Balan systems flow generally south-eastwards.
