    Badminton

Badminton is one of the finest conditioning game activities. A Badminton match consists of constant highly concentrated action; running, jumping, twisting, stretching, running backwards, throwing and striking. In a typical match the athletes cover every inch of the court and run more than one mile.

Here at IIT Kanpur, where the daily schedule is hectic and high academic stresses kill human brain, some people unload their mental burdens by playing Badminton. Badminton goes on religiously in the evenings from 7 to 9. The institute has a girls’ Badminton team that represents the institute at varying events. The team comprises of three players. Every year players pass out and we have new buds in the team.

The technical part consists of warming up pattern that include an 800m jog at the athletics field, followed by exercises and then court running. As the players are warmed up, regular practices start that consists of stroke practising and playing matches. We often have external teams coming to play friendly matches in order to get exposure.

Our team participated in Kanpur districts tournament’04 and then our team was declared to consist of Kanpur district champions! Our team bagged the gold medal in Udghosh’04 (Sports festival at IITK). Our team participated in the inter IIT sports meet held at IIT Madras in 2004 and was honored with the bronze medal. But as stated earlier, every year experienced players pass out and we have new gems in the team that need to be polished. This year we have two new players .We practise with the aim of turning every bronze into gold.
