Startup Internship Placement Program (SIPP)

Vision: Developing IIT Kanpur as a India’s hub of Next Generation innovators, entrepreneurs and change makers and amalgamate IIT Kanpur’s leadership in innovation with its strong intellectual resources to bring out country’s frontier entrepreneurial leader.

SIPP was initiated by SBERTC in association with E-Cell, IIT Kanpur two years back.Through this program we aim to collaborate with the start-ups willing to offer internships and job opportunities to the students of IIT Kanpur. This initiative has been extremely beneficial for both start-ups as well as students. Start-ups get a bunch of highly enthusiastic students, with a high susceptibility to learning new things; and creative minds that are determined on proving their mettle in the next big league of their life. SIPP Placements are scheduled between Jan-Feb period while SIPP Internships would take place during the month of March. SBERTC and E-Cell conduct Startup Internship Placement Program (SIPP) with the aim to help students get real life entrepreneurial experience. Startups from all over the world register with SIPP and organize skype-interviews / personal interviews with the second year, third year and fourth year students for the summer internships. Resume workshops are conducted every year as part of the recruitment process with these start-ups.

The program, aiming to provide internship to students in startups hence providing them an entrepreneurial summer, was initiated in the year 2010-11 yet it reached its all glory in the year 2011-12 when 135 start ups entered in the program and provided internships to over 100 students.

The program also boosted an exclusive partnership with pluggd.in . Around 40 startups have already registered with SIPP, and pitching of startups is ongoing. A resume workshop for the second yearites was organised on 1st / 2nd Feb. The recruitment will start after 26th February, 2014.

Launched only recently, SIPP (Startup Internship and Placement Program), a SBERTC and E-Cell IITK initiative, gives students a first-hand experience of working in a startup. Over 100 companies were registered and around 75 internships were offered by eminent startups.

Apart from the stipend, the interns get industry exposure and experience they required. Some of them shared their views:

It was an awesome experience to work at Aurus Network. Not only did I get a plethora of stuff for my own profile but was also exposed to the dynamism involved in the functioning of a business. The best thing about working in a start-up is that you find yourself working with a team that is highly passionate and enthusiastic, and your contribution affects the company substantially.

So when one works at a start-up, one gets to play a whole lot of roles right from performing as per your specialized skills to uniting the team. And this in turn exposes one more to the raw faces of managing a business, which I believe allowed me to learn and watch things more closely than just fetching me a certificate for my job.
