Report on NPE2010 organized on January 09, 2010.

----------------------------------------------------------------

A one-day workshop, Civilian Nuclear Energy, was organized by IIT as part of Golden Jubilee Energy Conclave. The theme was safety and regulatory aspects of civilian nuclear reactors. It was inaugurated by Prof Raj Thareja, Deputy Director, IIT Kanpur. He stressed the role of six new universities where masters programme in nuclear engineering has been started in the past two years.

There were three sessions with a total of five lectures, four by Indian experts and one by a foreign guest from Purdue University. First speaker, Dr Om Pal Singh (Secretary, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board), outlined major future efforts related to the post-123 regulatory aspects of Indian nuclear reactors. Second lecture was on various applications of radioisotopes and it was delivered by the Dr Anil Kohli (Chief Executive, Board of Radiation and Isotopes Technology). Safety issues related to power reactor operations were discussed in the third lecture by Sudesh Sharma (Dy GM, Corporate Communications, Nuclear Power Corporation of Indian Ltd).

Second session started with a presentation from M Rajadhyaksha (Managing Director, PM Dimensions) who outlined a strategy for the development of trained nuclear engineering workforce in the post-123 conditions. Last presentation was made by Dr S Revankar (Professor of Nuclear Engg, Purdue University) and it involved details of computer codes used in carrying out thermal safety analysis of civilian nuclear reactors.

The third session was a Panel Discussion on Nuclear Engineering Education in India: Beyond 123. The panelists included Prof M S Gupta who represented School of Nuclear Engineering of Pandit Deendayal University (Gandhinagar).  There were about 170 participants (120 from outside, 50 from IITK) who were asking several penetrating questions in all the sessions.
