Undergraduate students
IIT Kanpur offers a flexible curriculum with options for doing double major and minors in other Departments. UG students can also opt for dual degree program (BT-MT) by adding one year of research credits to earn a MTech degree as well. Our undergraduate students have strong background in science and engineering. The flexibility in curriculum allows students to develop their interests. Some of the past recruiters of UG students are Tata Steel, Applied Materials, GE Digital, JSW Steel, Sterlite, Morgan Stanley, Thermex, pwc, etc. Many students also go for higher studies abroad. There are well equipped research labs in Biomaterials, Computational Materials Science, Material Degradation, Electroceramics, Extractive Metallurgy, Flexible and Organic Electronics, Manufacturing Processes, Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, Physical Metallurgy, Powder Metallurgy, Process Modelling and Ceramics, etc. MTech students have a good placement record. Our alumnus from PhD program are well placed as scientists and faculty members in leading institutions in the country as well as abroad.

MSE's Departmental labs house common characterization equipment such as XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman Spectroscopy, DMA and various mechanical and electrical testing facilities. In addition to that, there are common Institute facilities such as Advanced Centre for Materials Science (ACMS), Centre for Nanosciences, and Advanced Imaging Centre that are accessible to all.
