HPC Symposium
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
Date: 25th April, 2025
Venue: Outreach Auditorium
The HPC Symposium will provide a platform for HPC users from various branches of science and technology to come together to present their research findings, share new ideas, and discuss the future of computing.
IIT Kanpur has been a frontrunner in HPC from its inception. IIT Kanpur's journey started with the IBM 1620, the first HPC in an academic institution in the country. The Digital Equipment Company (DEC) computer DEC-1090 arrived in the 70s and was the backbone of computing for about ten years. IIT Kanpur was in the top 500 list in 2010 (https://top500.org/system/176914) and 2013 (https://top500.org/system/178325) with its HPC2010 and HPC2013 computing facilities. With the growing demand for resources has led to long wait times for users and recognizing IIT Kanpur's contributions and the needs of researchers of IIT Kanpur and the entire country, the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) awarded 1.6 petaflops HPC system to IIT Kanpur. Planning for the data center and other related work began in 2019, and by the end of 2020, we commissioned a new cluster named PARAM Sanganak. This system, which ranks among the top 10 in India (https://topsc.cdacb.in/filterdetails?slug=July2021), has a peak capacity of 1.6 petaflops.
The two current supercomputers have been instrumental in propelling the research activities of IIT Kanpur to the frontiers, and many research publications have come out of this. This symposium will help in discussing the exciting research works happening at IIT Kanpur that have used HPC systems.
