Alumnus Award 2011
The
Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA) is the highest award given by
the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur to its alumni in recognition
of their achievements of exceptional merit. The DAA is awarded
for outstanding achievements in areas like entrepreneurship, management,
professional and academic pursuits and any other activity pertaining
to the service of humanity at large. This year six alumni were
honoured with the DAA on 12th March, 2011. To know about previous

Satya Pal Singh Chauhan
Satya Pal Singh Chauhan, obtained
his BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1968 and
a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University
in Cleveland, Ohio. His student research led to a patent application
for the production of synthetic diamonds. Since then, he has
won seven R&D 100 Awards, known as "The Oscars of Innovation."
Dr. Chauhan has had a 35-year long illustrious management career
at Battelle, the world's largest non-profit independent R&D
organization and a leading developer of innovative technologies,
such as the Xerox photocopier. His professional career has four
focus areas: (1) leading research and development (R&D)
teams representing multiple disciplines to solve complex problems;
(2) solving key societal problems related to energy, environment,
water, and health; (3) creating patent able, new technologies
and advancing the same to market introduction; and, (4) advancing
green energy products and processes. A common thread in Dr.
Chauhan's career of notable innovations is the intent to decrease
environmental impact. He is currently leading the commercialization
of several technologies related to green products, green chemistry,
and green energy. Along with his professional career at Battelle,
Dr. Chauhan has successfully launched three businesses and has
been a civic leader.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award
of IIT Kanpur has been conferred on Dr. Chauhan, Senior Program
Director, Battelle Memorial Institute, for his outstanding contributions
to the field of Research and Development.

B. V. R. Mohan Reddy
B. V. R. Mohan Reddy,
obtained his BTech degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1971
from the College of Engineering, Kakinada, Andhra University
and thereafter obtained his first Masters degree in Industrial
Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1974 and his second Masters from
the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor USA. Mr. Reddy started
his career in the DCM Group (Shriram Refrigeration). Then he
moved to MICO Bosch and subsequently he worked in HCL and OMC
Computers as President and Managing Director. He introduced
the CAD/CAM systems in India and was instrumental in the adoption
of these technologies by the Indian manufacturing industry.
He then ventured into entrepreneurship and founded the Infotech
Enterprises in 1992 with a vision of 'Providing technology solutions
to global customers at an affordable cost with world-class quality'.
Infotech Enterprises today is a global powerhouse of talent
with revenue of over Rs. 1,000 crores and employing more than
10,000 engineers and providing high technology engineering design
and geospatial data and technology services to many very prestigious
customers. Mr. Reddy has received numerous awards for his achievements.

of IIT Kanpur has been conferred on Mr. Reddy, Founder, Infotech
Enterprises Limited, for his outstanding entrepreneurial and
managerial skills.

Mahesh Gupta
Mahesh Gupta,
obtained his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur
in 1975. He earned his post graduate degree in Petroleum Technology
from IIPM, Dehradun. Mr. Gupta had a high profile career in
the Indian Oil Corporation which he quit to pioneer Reverse
Osmosis (RO) technology for making pure drinking water available
at a reasonable cost. This switch in career was partly due to
the fact that his son contracted hepatitis, a water borne, disease.
In 2009, the company stamped its supremacy on all its competitors
by inventing and introducing a technological marvel –
The KENT+ (Plus) computer controlled range of water purification
systems. During his journey of discovery and innovation, Mr.
Gupta decided to also provide wholesome healthcare to mankind
and added an array of ozone based foods and air purifiers to
his product range, thus bringing us pure water to drink, pure
food to eat and pure air to breathe. The company that Mr. Gupta
heads – KENT RO Systems, has made a mark in the Indian
drinking water scenario and is the winner of the 'Best Domestic
Purifier' Award given by UNESCO and Water Digest International
in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 and “The Golden Peacock”
Award for the best Eco-Innovation in 2007. Mr. Gupta is also
deeply spiritual and is an ardent disciple of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Ji.

Systems Ltd for his outstanding entrepreneurial and managerial
skills.

Yogendra Kumar Joshi
Yogendra Kumar Joshi,
obtained his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur
in 1979, a Master of Science (MS) degree from the State University
of New York, Buffalo in 1981, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering
and Applied Mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania in
1984. Dr. Joshi is Professor of Mechanical Engineering, with
a joint appointment in the School of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds
the John M. McKenney and Warren D. Shiver Distinguished Chair
in the George W. Woodruff School. He is a founding Co-Director
of the Consortium for Energy Efficient Thermal Management (CEETHERM),
and serves as the Theme Leader for Thermal Management and Power
Delivery for the multi-university DARPA/MARCO Interconnect Focus
Center, involving Georgia Tech, MIT, Stanford, RPI, and the
University of Albany. He directs the Microelectronics and Emerging
Technologies Thermal Laboratory (METTL), as well as the Consortium
for Energy Efficient Thermal Management (CEETHERM). Prof. Joshi's
current research deals with heat transfer and fluid flow processes
associated with emerging technologies. He is an elected Fellow
of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the
American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has
won several prestigious awards the most recent being the Yahoo
Faculty Research and Engagement in (Award 2010), the Intel Data
Center Efficiency Challenge Competition Enterprise Category
Award (2009; made to research group) and the IEEE Semi Therm
Significant Contributor Award (2009).
The Distinguished Alumnus Award
of IIT Kanpur has been conferred on Dr. Joshi, Professor and
John M. McKenney and Warren D. Shiver Distinguished Chair at
the G.W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia
Institute of Technology, for his outstanding contributions and
academic achievements.

Sandip P. Trivedi
Sandip P. Trivedi, obtained
his Msc (Int) degree in Physics from IIT Kanpur in 1985 and
a PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1990. After
holding several positions at prestigious institutes such as
the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, he joined the Tata
Institute for Fundamental Research (TIFR) as a faculty member
in 1999 where he has been ever since. Prof. Trivedi is one of
the outstanding theoretical physicists in the country with interests
that range from String Theory to Particle Physics and Cosmology.
He is well-known for his contributions to string theory, in
particular finding (along with Prof. Renata Kallosh, Department
of Physics, Stanford University; Prof. Andrei Dmitriyevich Linde,
Department of Physics, Stanford University; and Prof. Shamit
Kachru, Department of Physics, Stanford University;) the first
models of accelerated expansion of the universe in low energy
supersymmetric string. This path breaking work is well known
as the KKLT (Kallosh, Kachru, Linde, Trivedi) construction.
This work which also addresses the cosmological constant problem
has brought string theory closer to observational cosmology.
Prof. Trivedi has also authored seminal papers on the famous
Information paradox in Black Hole Physics. He is the recipient
of many awards such as the Infosys award, the Bhatnagar award
and the Swarnajayanti Fellowship.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award
of IIT Kanpur has been conferred on Prof. Trivedi, a theoretical
physicist working at Tata Institute for Fundamental Research
(TIFR), for his outstanding contributions and academic achievements.

Gaurav Gupta
Gaurav Gupta, obtained
his BTech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1987
and his MTech in power systems from IIT Delhi. He also holds
a certificate in public finance management from Harvard University.
He joined the Civil Services in 1990 and currently is the managing
director of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).
With 33,800 workers and 7,000 buses carrying 2.5 million passengers
daily, KSRTC is one of the most profitable state transport undertakings
in India. Mr. Gupta has modernized KSRTC making it among the
first organizations to have electronic ticketing machines, along
with a cellphone-friendly and web-based reservation system.
Another special feature of KSRTC buses today is that nearly
a thousand of them run on the green fuel, ethanol-blended diesel.
Mr. Gupta has inducted high-end Mercedes and Volvo buses in
KSRTC. Also it is the first corporation to completely implement
the economic stimulus package under the Jawaharlal Nehru National
Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM); the low-floor buses fabricated
by KSRTC are being circulated among JNNURM cities as a model.
Mr. Gupta started the 'Sustainable Urban Transport Project ‘(SUTP)
to reinvent KSRTC operations in Mysore city. He has encouraged
the use of new technologies such as the Global Positioning System
(GPS) and the Geographical Information System (GIS) on KSRTC
buses. Mr. Gupta serves as the vice-president of the Association
of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), a nationwide association
of 53 STUs; he also serves on a number of Central panels.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award
of IIT Kanpur has been conferred on Mr. Gupta, IAS, Managing
Director, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, Bangalore
for his outstanding managerial skills.

Satyendra
K. Dubey Memorial Award 2011
The
Satyendra K. Dubey Memorial Award was instituted by IIT Kanpur
in 2005, in memory of its alumnus Mr. Satyendra K. Dubey (BT/CE/94),
former Deputy General Manager/Project Director of the Koderma
Project Implementation Unit at National Highway Authority of India
(NHAI). He was tragically killed on the morning of 27th November,
2003 in Gaya, Bihar, while fighting against corruption in the
National Highway Authority of India. He sacrificed his life to
uphold the integrity and dignity of his profession. The award
is given to an alumnus of any IIT who upholds the spirit of Satyendra
K. Dubey and who has distinguished himself/herself by displaying
the highest professional integrity and by upholding human values.

Sanjeeb Kumar Patjoshi
Sanjeeb Kumar Patjoshi, obtained
his MTech, Electrical Engineering, from IIT Kanpur in 1988.
He is an IPS officer of the 1991 batch. He obtained his MBA
from Syracuse University, USA and from IIM Bangalore. In 2010
May, he received the "Pride of India" award at Bangalore
for his contribution to the dairy sector. Mr. Patjoshi is presently
the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Kerala State
Road Transport Corporation, which has an annual turnover Rs.
1500 Crores, has 35000 employees and 6000 buses. During his
tenure as the commissioner of Kozhikode, Mr. Patjoshi had helped
a victim, a plantation laborer who had over 65 per cent burns
and needed medical help, to fight against human rights violations.
When the Government hospital in Kozhikode informed him that
it had no sterilized facility to prevent infections for burn
patients, Mr. Patjoshi formed a committee which included the
Malayalam movie star Mr. Suresh Gopi, and the Jnanpith award
winning writer Mr. M. T. Vasudevan Nair, to float an appeal
for donations. Within a week the victim had a sterilized AC
room and appropriate medication. The girl recovered fully in
a few months, and was then helped to get a job in her hometown.
Mr. Patjoshi has been the Joint Director to the Government of
India, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, New Delhi; the Commissioner
of Police of Calicut city; the ADC to the Governor of Kerala;
the Communication officer in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo,
Europe where he was also given a United Nations medal.

of IIT Kanpur has been conferred on Mr. Sanjeeb Kumar Patjoshi,
an IPS officer, for distinguishing himself by displaying the
highest professional integrity and for upholding human values.
