The Housemaid By Freida Mcfadden

The Housemaid is a psychological thriller by Freida McFadden about a maid who is hired to work for the Winchester family. The story follows Millie as she deals with the eccentricities of Nina Winchester, her growing attraction towards Nina's husband, Andrew, and the unsettling mystery of the household.

The book keeps you hooked, the characters leave you rattled, and the twist hits you in the face. The protagonist, Millie, is an ex-con desperately trying to get a fresh start. Nina is a wealthy woman believed to have mental health issues and is hell-bent on making Millie suffer, while Andrew appears to be a godsend. However, the eerie nature of the house ensures that you sense something more sinister is going on.

While Nina's character is very well written, no doubt aided by McFadden's background as a brain injury specialist, Millie's background could have been more fleshed out. The fast pacing of the book keeps you engaged, and the ending leaves you intrigued, though the final 30 or so pages feel a bit like plot armour for the lead.

The author executes the twist and its elements to perfection, delivering an impossible-to-put-down thriller. Overall, the book delivers on its promise of providing a popcorn-munching read, making it a solid pick for anyone interested in thrillers
