Travel / Visits

Participants
  • We expect you to reach the Visitor’s Hostel by the evening of 5th June 2003.  IIT Kanpur is situated about 16 km from the Kanpur Central Railway Station. We shall arrange to receive/drop  you at the Kanpur Central railway station, if you intimate your travel plans well in advance.   However, you may also reach IIT Kanpur by hiring an auto rickshaw or a taxi. The fare from the railway station to the IIT Campus is around Rs. 100/- and 175/- for auto rickshaw and taxi, respectively
  • If you have informed your arrival plans in advance, you will be received in Kanpur Central Railway Station.  As you alight at the Kanpur Central Station, please come to the Platform No. 1 EXIT DOOR. You will find someone holding a placard of Summer Camp 2003. Before disclosing your identity, confirm that the person waiting for you knows your name and place of arrival. (Note:: Incase of a doubt of the authenticity of the person receiving you at the railway station, please contact the Camp Coordinators from the STD booth and verify.)
  • Carry light luggage  for  your own convenience as porters may not be available everywhere, and no  other fellow participant will carry your luggage.
  • The field visits will be by bus.
  • Bring your caps ,camera , note books, own medicines, etc., especially for the field visit.
  • Bring your college identity card and driving license (if any).
  • Bring your own alarm clocks.
  • Do not bring originals of ANY certificates.
  • No participant will be allowed to leave the camp in between for any purposes whatsoever. Hence, if you have any other important responsibility during the period of the camp, you are advised not to join the camp.  
  • The to-and-fro travel fare to Kanpur from your place will be borne 
    by you. Also, please make your own reservations for these travels. 
  • In no case participants will be permitted to join camp late.  If you have any special problem, discuss with the Camp Coordinator. However, in case of late arrival, due whatsoever the reason, without the knowledge of Camp Coordinator, the camp organizers will deny your admission to the Camp.

Technical  
  • The participants have to bring a complete PowerPoint presentation of a Civil Engineering project.
  • The dress code will be as follows:
       All lectures and field visits - FORMAL (Dress, with Tie and Shoes)
       All dinners - INFORMAL (Formal Dress without Tie)
       All games and sports - CASUAL (Sports outfit with Sneakers)
  • There will be several lectures/exercises by eminent persons in Civil Engineering.  Please bring your notebook, calculator, etc. for these.  
 
 
 
 
Boarding / Lodging  
  •  You will be sharing a room with a fellow participant.  The rooms are well furnished; please don't bring any bedding with you.  
  • A telephone is provided in each room (for inward calls only).
  • STD facility is available in the Visitors Hostel itself (at cost!!).
  • Laundry facility is available at the Visitor's Hostel (at cost!!).
  • Guardians (if any) accompanying participants to Kanpur, will have to make their own boarding and lodging arrangements outside campus in Kanpur City.  We shall be able to book Visitor’s Hostel for persons accompanying, only if intimated well in advance.  In such cases, the charges for Visitor’s Hostel, which are substantial, however will be borne by the accompanying person.  
  • IIT Kanpur has on campus a State Bank of India with ATM facility.  
  • IIT Kanpur has a small shopping center which will cater to most of the demands of the participants
  • During the period of camp, all your travel, accommodation and meals will be covered by the Camp. So, bring pocket money only for your general needs.

Cultural / Sports Activities
  • Get your own sports gears (rackets, shoes, tracksuits, swimming costume, etc.)
  • We will also have a cultural evening.  Bring the musical instruments that you play, or any other item  that is required for your performing your choice of cultural activity (Don't forget to bring your best traditional/regional attire!). 
Special Instructions
Dear Participants:

We would like to ensure that you draw full benefit of the Camp. To facilitate this, we would like you to follow the following guidelines during the Camp.  These guidelines are in addition to those already intimated to you and placed on the web site.

1. The dress code is as below:
i. Morning activity and Sports and Games period:  Appropriate sports wear
ii. Lectures/Activities/Video Classes: Formal
             (Boys: Trousers with shirt tucked in, Ties and Shoes;
            
Girls: Your traditional formal wear or same as boys)
iii. Tours:
     In lectures during tour - Formal as above.
     Project site visits - Comfortable travel wear (could be denim, cargo,
     T-shirt, etc
iv. Cultural evening: Your traditional wear representing your culture/region
v.  Mess:
             Breakfast and Lunch – As for lectures
             Dinner - Informal (formal dress without tie)
2. Visitor’s Hostel is always occupied by several guests of IIT Kanpur.  We          expect you to maintain decorum and respect the freedom of others.
3. You are expected to be punctual through out the camp for all
    activities
4. In case of any special circumstance or emergency, please contact

5. For the entire duration of the Camp, you are not expected to leave the     campus for any silly reason, whatsoever.  Please make such a request to     the Camp Coordinators ONLY in emergency.
6. Please make ONLY short telephone calls from STD booth in Visitor’s              Hostel for the consideration of others waiting in the queue.
7. DO NOT enter into any kind of oral or physical altercation with
    anybody on the campus. In any such situations, whatsoever, your first
    move should be to contact the Camp Coordinators.
8. While you are at the Visitors’ Hostel, you can order extra food (beyond
    the usual bed tea, breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided by the Camp)
    from the mess to your rooms. However, you will have to pay for all such
    requests.
