Celebrating 23 Years of Innovation and Excellence SMSS Lab, IIT Kanpur! 🎉

Today, on the auspicious occasion of the 23rd foundation day of the Smart Materials, Structures, and Systems (SMSS) Lab at IIT Kanpur, we are delighted to reflect upon the incredible journey of this esteemed laboratory. Since its establishment on 8th June 2001, the SMSS Lab has been at the forefront of cutting-edge research and has consistently strived for excellence in the field of smart materials and robotics.

Over the years, the SMSS Lab has made remarkable contributions to the world of science and technology. With an extensive alumni network comprising 14 PhDs, 82 M.Tech/ MS(R), and 31 M.Des graduates, our lab has nurtured exceptional talent and empowered individuals to become leaders in their respective fields. One of our proudest achievements is the significant impact we have made through our research outputs. The SMSS Lab has published over 100 journal articles and presented at 50+ conferences, showcasing our dedication to advancing knowledge and sharing our findings with the global scientific community. Additionally, our lab has been awarded 14 patents, highlighting our commitment to innovation and intellectual property.

Collaboration has been a key pillar of our success, and we have forged strong ties with both industry and academia. These partnerships have enabled us to bring real-world applicability to our research and fostered an environment of interdisciplinary learning. We are grateful for the support and cooperation received from our collaborators, as together, we have achieved remarkable milestones. Furthermore, the SMSS Lab has undertaken more than 60 projects, with a sanctioned budget of 30 Crore INR. This reflects not only the trust placed in our capabilities but also our commitment to executing impactful research that brings tangible benefits to society.

The core research areas of the SMSS Lab encompass Healthcare Robotics, Active & Passive Vibration Control, Intelligent System Design, Structural Health Management, Sensors and Actuators, and Smart Materials and Robotics.

On this special occasion, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the faculty members, researchers, staff, alumni, industry partners, and well-wishers who have been part of the SMSS Lab’s journey. Your unwavering support and dedication have been instrumental in our accomplishments.
