PG Admission:

A postgraduate (PG) education broadens the perspective and inculcates the habit of original, creative, and independent thinking. Many of the well-known persons in various fields of Civil Engineering encompassing academic institutes, research organizations, and consulting and construction companies, have benefited from their experiences during a higher education. For some jobs, a Masters or Doctoral degree is required or considered desirable for professional development. PG education in the Department is aimed at attaining an understanding of the basic scientific principles underlying various disciplines in Civil Engineering. In addition, the research component of the PG programs is meant to develop capabilities to confidently undertake independent analysis of complex field situations. Our graduates have gone on to become leaders in their profession and have made significant contributions to research and development. Keeping in view the needs of the society and the challenging problems faced by the profession, postgraduate programs have been developed in several fields of specialization. And, Hydraulics and Water Resources is one field among them. Our program has sufficient breadth to accommodate both those students who wish to emphasize preparation for professional practice as well as those who wish to orient their studies toward a research or academic career. Both M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees are available in this specialized area Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering.

HIGHLIGHTS

Direct admission to candidates with very high GATE score

Travel expenses for PG students participating in a national conference (once a year) are borne by the Department. For international conferences, the Department provides a matching grant to that provided by the Institute.

Departmental computer laboratory with PC's connected to the central computer system through Local Area Network. Also includes printer, scanner, and CD-writer.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The following are the eligibility requirements for various programmes:

M. Tech. Programme

B.Tech./B.E. degree in Civil/Agriculture Engineering. The candidates must have taken at-least one mathematics course at undergraduate level.

In addition to above, a valid GATE score is also needed.

The GATE requirement is waived for B. Tech. graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CGPA/CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CGPA/CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B. Tech. However, such students are not entitled for Institute Assistantship if overall CGPA/CPI is below 8.0.

Candidates with AMIE certificate are not eligible to apply.

Ph.D. Programme

M.Tech./M.E. degree in Civil/Aerospace/ Agriculture Engineering.

In addition to above, candidates with B.Tech./B.E. degree in Engineering with a minimum overall 75-percent marks/7.5 CPI and a valid GATE score or Master’s degree in science or an allied area with exceptional academic records may also be considered for admission directly into the Ph.D. programme.

Notes:

Candidates with M.Sc. degree must have mathematics as one of the subjects at 10+2 level.

Some bright and motivated candidates with M.Sc. degree may be considered under certain circumstances; however, they should provide documentary proof of having taken mathematics at 10+2 level and should have qualified GATE or CSIR-NET for JRF.

Candidates with M.Sc. degree must have mathematics as one of the subjects at B.Sc. level and should have qualified GATE or CSIR-NET for JRF

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Application forms and detailed information can be had free of charge , from the Assistant Registrar (Academic), IIT Kanpur-208016 personally or by sending the request for the same along with a self-addressed stamped (For Rs.15) strong cloth-lined envelop of 23 cm x 17 cm.
