Biomaterials

Biomaterials are natural or synthetic materials used in medical field to improve quality of life by either replacing tissue/organ or assisting their function.

At present, the department is active development and characterization of biomaterials mostly for orthopaedics, wound healing and drug delivery applications.

In orthopaedic applications, hydroxyapatite is studied as a material for bone tissue regeneration. More specifically, increasing the toughness, antimicrobial properties and wear resistance of hydroxyapatite is studied.

We are developing wound dressing materials that does not stick upon their removal. The dressing from these materials will be removed easily (unlike cotton) without sticking to the wound. Materials for transdermal drug delivery are developed. Their mechanical, swelling and drug release properties of the material are controlled.
