Abstract:

The past century has seen huge achievements in ‘hard’ sciences such as chemistry, mathematics and physics particularly, while other sciences such as biology, sociology and psychology were to be striving to receive equal recognition. Today this divide is much less prominent. Technology development and innovation take place in ‘ecosystems’. Many researchers work in multidisciplinary teams and innovation takes place where traditional scientific fields intersect. This seminar discusses several key trends in the development of steel products for passenger cars and will give examples of Tata Steel’s role at the forefront of automotive developments. A key challenge hereby is light-weighting vehicles, where Tata Steel R&D is engaged in the complete process from lightweight design, lightweight construction and lightweight production. These activities are prime examples of networked innovation, innovation across disciplines and innovation to serve humanity.
