Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
Department of Industrial and Management Engineering
Workshop on
Role of Patent Literature in Technology Development
1-2 December 2005
Introduction
With the advent of globalization and liberalization, technology has become important for competitiveness of the Indian Industry. Traditionally, developed countries have protected and controlled Intellectual Property through patents. Patent literature is a rich source of information about technological knowledge and if used appropriately can become a valuable tool in technology development.
Technology mapping helps in understanding the relevance and progress of various sub-technologies. It helps in classifying sub-technologies, measure their progress, identify the major players, asses the maturity level and the likelihood of commercialization.
Technology Development in Indian Languages
The Department of Communication and Information Technology initiated TDIL with the objective of developing information processing tools and techniques to facilitate man machine interaction without language barrier. The thrust areas include translation support systems and man machine interface system.
This workshop is aimed at discussing the impact of patents on technology development through a technology mapping search engine developed at IIT Kanpur through the project support from Intellectual Property Cell of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The participants would also be exposed to patents in their research area which would encourage them to use patent literature as a rich source of knowledge as well as to file patents. In each session, the participants will be given a document containing selected relevant patents granted by USPTO.
Conference Agenda
The conference agenda includes :
Search Engine developed at IIT Kanpur for Technology Mapping will be made available to the participants.
Understanding role of patents in Technology Mapping.
Understanding patents especially software and business related patents.
Understanding your own work with reference to USPTO patents.
Focus on TDIL
Identify patents in the areas
of OCR and Machine Translation Support System from the USPTO web site.
Relate and compare the work done under TDIL projects with the identified
patents.
