- Started in 1964, the Ph.D.
programme of the Department is offered in the following
disciplines: Economics, English Literature and Linguistics,
Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology. To date nearly 170
students have successfully completed the programme. Currently
over 40 students have registered in the programme.

The essential qualifications for being considered
for admission include at least 55% marks or a CPI of 5.5 (on a
10-point scale) at the MA/B.Tech. level, subject to this exceeding
by a minimum of seven percent on the stipulated pass marks/CPI.
Selection is based on the candidate`s cumulative performance in

Besides those who qualify for scholarship from elsewhere, the
Institute also provides Assistantship to those who have passed an
all-India test (NET) conducted by the CSIR/UGC/GATE in the last
five years. The value of
such assistantships is Rs.12000 for the first two years and Rs.14000
for the third and fourth year. A generous contingency allowance is
also admissible.

Applicants for admission to PhD in Economics should have at least +2
High School level background in Mathematics. Preference will be given
to the applicants who have credited undergraduate courses in
Mathematics at least at the Pass level of Indian universities.

Announcement for admissions appear in National newspapers twice
every year. However, admissions are made round the year.
Prospective students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
