Sociology at IIT Kanpur
The Sociology group in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Kanpur is known for contributions in the areas of systems analysis, population studies, caste, inequality and development. In recent times, it has diversified to include studies of research and development establishments, human rights, gender studies, the sociology of software organizations and the sociology of education. The PhD programme in sociology is based on advanced courses in research methods, statistical inference and sociological theory. Faculty members also provide consultancy in areas such as health, rural development and education. Currently, there are four faculty members and nine PhD students in the sociology discipline.
