Prof. Budhani is an experimental low temperature physicist with interest in the areas of superconductivity and magnetism in Low-dimensional systems. Born in a picturesque village of the Kumaon Himalayas, he received his M.Sc. Degree in physics from Allahabad University and Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He has been a research scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles during the period 1984-87, and a staff scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York from 1988 till 1994. Prof. Budhani has also been a visiting professor at the Center for Superconductivity Research - University of Maryland and a Guest Scientist at CRISMAT Laboratory,  Caen - France and Brookhaven Lab, after joining IIT Kanpur in the year 1994. Prof. Budhani is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Indian National Science Acadamy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India.
