One platform, five stages

India’s green hydrogen journey, from laboratory research to field deployment and market readiness.

  1. Laboratory researchFundamental research, material discovery, simulation and analysis.
  2. Technology developmentPrototyping, scale-up testing and performance optimization.
  3. System integrationGeneration, storage, distribution and application systems working together.
  4. Field deploymentPilot projects, demonstration and real-world implementation.
  5. Market readinessPolicy, commercialization, price alignment and global competitiveness.

Why green hydrogen needs research

Made by splitting water with renewable energy, green H₂ is clean. Making it cheap is the open problem.

Reliable energy source

Renewable-based supply cuts dependence on fossil fuels and gives a stable source of energy.

Long-term storage

Can be stored in large amounts for a long time, unlike batteries.

Economic growth

Green H₂ from waste biomass creates a revenue stream for local communities.

Reduced pollution

Electrolysis of water with renewable energy is free of carbon emissions and pollution.

Local production

Can be produced locally, cutting costly and environmentally damaging imports.

The challenge

Expensive to produce: almost three times the cost of natural gas.

Research and innovation are needed to make green H₂ cheaper to generate and easier to adopt.
