The Office of Research and Development (http://www.iitk.ac.in/dord/) provides administrative, financial and managerial support for the execution of all research and development projects in the Institute.
The key role of the Office is to provide a conductive atmosphere for research and development activities of the Institute. Some of the functions of the R&D office are:
- Managing research projects as per the norms of the funding agency and IIT Kanpur. This includes managing the expenses incurred in R&D projects.
- Promotion of Institute-Industry interactions
- Technology Development and Transfer
- Provides a platform for start-ups by prospective entrepreneurs to convert their innovative ideas into commercially viable products. It provides services related to patenting and commercialization activities.
- Publishes research within the Institute through magazines like R&D Newsletter, Directions.
- Institute Lectures
- It liaisons between the funding agencies and potential sponsors of the projects.
- Joint funding programmes
- Vetting of all agreements and MoUs
The Institute has 10 Research Centers with the state-of-the-art equipments viz: Center for Environmental Science and Engineering, National Information Center of Earthquake Engineering, Thematic Unit of Excellence, SAMTEL Center for Display Technologies, Syndicate Bank Entrepreneurship Research and Training Centre, BSNL-IITK Telecom Center of Excellence, Center for Laser Technology, Center for Mechatronics, Advanced Center for Materials Science, Advanced Center for Electronic Systems.
The Institute has several unique facilities like National Wind Tunnel Facility, a 6-rack Real Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) Facility, the Pseudo-Dynamic (PsD) Testing Facility, Engine Research Lab, Focused Ion Beam (FIB) System etc.
