The department has a rich tradition of teaching and research and is widely recognized as a pioneer in Electrical Engineering education in India. Research interests, pertain to fundamental research, sponsored and consultancy projects. Students, faculty members and engineers participate actively in research. The infrastructure is upgraded regularly through the support of institute and industries.

Within four major specialization of (i) Power and control, (ii) Signal Processing, Communications and Networks ,(iii) RF, Microwaves and Photonics, and (iv) Microelectronics, VLSI and Display Technologies, the teaching and research focus in on a wide gamut of sub-disciplines including including wireless communication, computer networking, control systems, digital image processing, electronic instrumentation, high voltage engineering, HVDC transmission, microwaves, optical fibre communications, power systems, power electronics and organic electronics. The associated laboratory infrastructure is comprehensive and is modernized on a regular basis.
