Possible Solutions:
The key issues discussed in the preceding paras are only a few factors
contributing to traffic mismanagement and only an in depth study can establish
the full extent of the problems related to traffic. It may even require
circulating a questionnaire to the residents to solicit their views on
the subject. However in absence of such an exercise, I would like to suggest
the following plan of action.
| 1. |
Proper walk ways may be developed on both sides of the
main drives, stretching from Railway Gate to Hall-II and Nursery to
Sub-station-III, to keep the pedestrian traffic off the carriage way. |
| 2. |
Main drives may be widened to accommodate 6 meter wide
lines separated by a low height central verge. |
| 3. |
Nankari traffic may be segregated at the Railway Gate and diverted
thro' an alternate route bypassing the Campus. In this context two
alternatives could be considered:
| i) |
Extend the airstrip feeder road upto GT Road and
provide an additional manned aged at the railway crossing. This
will facilitate the exit of Nankari traffic from Chandel Gate
to GT Road without having to pass thro' the main arteries of
the Campus. |
| ii) |
Construct a new road from the existing railway
crossing, parallel to railway track and within the IIT boundary,
and connect it to the airstrip feeder road. Nankari traffic
shall then proceed from Chandel gate to Railway Gate via NCC
and airstrip. The proposed road may also be connected to the
bye lanes in Type V/IV area to take the pressure off the main
drive. |
|
| 4. |
The road from Banyan tree crossing to airstrip also
carries substantial volume of traffic. Besides this, the residents
of Type-III Qtrs. and their visitors often park their vehicles temporarily
on the road side. Construction of a parallel road on the other side
of Type-III Qtrs., connecting shopping complex to airstrip feeder
road, would be of great help in relieving the pressure on this road. |
| 5. |
Condition of roads must be improved on priority. Resurfacing
of roads, redesigning of street junctions, construction of manned
traffic posts at vulnerable locations such as SAC crossing, provision
of speed breakers on side lanes, erection of sign posts for controlling
speed of vehicles and frequent clearing of wild vegetation from the
shoulders are some of the measures that would go along way in improving
the traffic worthiness of the roads. |
