About the Project

The research project “Meeting the Challenge of Urban PHC Systems in India – A Learning Sites Approach”, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, establishes collaborative research partnerships across institutions, with learning sites in Kanpur, Bhubaneswar, and Bengaluru, coordinated through a global hub at University College London (Global Business School for Health).

This project uses a learning site approach across selected Indian cities to generate actionable evidence on the functioning and performance of urban primary health care (UPHC) systems. It examines how key structural and systemic features—such as health market pluralism, local governance arrangements, migrant populations, and climate-related vulnerabilities—shape the delivery of UPHC, with the aim of identifying system-level constraints and informing improvements in service models. The study employs a sequential mixed-methods design, combining literature reviews and site-specific situational analyses with integrated quantitative and qualitative research.
