Programme Overview

Find the true energy minimum — then design to reach it.

Most plants chase energy savings one exchanger at a time. Process integration inverts that: it treats the plant as a single thermal system, establishes the minimum energy it could possibly need, and only then designs the network to get there.

The course follows the composite-curve and pinch-design methods of Kemp's Pinch Analysis and Process Integration — from data extraction and energy targeting, through heat exchanger network design and retrofit, to the extensions into water and hydrogen systems.

Every day pairs teaching with worked industrial case studies and a hands-on practice session. Close to a third of the programme is applied work, closing with a group discussion and quiz on the final day.

You leave with a method, not a lecture. Stream data extraction, targeting, network design and the economics to defend it — applied to plants like your own.

The face of the course, Dr Alok K Saboo, is a distinguished chemical engineer, energy consultant and one of the early pioneers in the application of pinch technology and resilient process design. He is currently a distinguished visiting professor in Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. During his long illustrious career, he has worked with Professor Bodo Linnhoff, who developed the pinch analysis method, has developed pinch analysis software packages, and carried out revamp studies for more than 500 process plants across the world.

A Gold Medallist from IIT Kanpur, Dr Saboo earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison under Professor Manfred Morari, a process design and control stalwart. He worked as an independent consultant to leading refineries and petrochemical companies for more than four decades and subsequently founded Energy Consultants Pvt Ltd, where he serves as Managing Director.

His consulting career has taken him from refineries and petrochemical complexes to a wide range of process industries, including breweries, oleochemicals, steel, alumina, and power plants. He has undertaken major assignments for Reliance Industries, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, HPCL, ESSAR Oil UK, and many other leading national and international companies.

His work has delivered annual savings ranging from millions to hundreds of millions of US Dollars across major industrial sites. With experience of more than 500 large-scale projects under his belt, he has also trained engineers and industry professionals in pinch technology and energy conservation, and has actively contributed to research in pinch analysis. He stands tall in the field of Process Integration, has been recognized worldwide for his contributions, and is considered India's foremost authority in industrial applications of pinch technology.

The programme follows the targeting-first structure of Kemp's standard text, taught with worked industrial cases throughout.

Certification

An official Certificate of Participation is awarded and distributed at the close of Day 3.

Do I need prior experience with pinch analysis?

No. Day 1 starts from first principles and builds up. A working knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals — heat transfer, mass and energy balances — is assumed.

What is the difference between onsite and online?

The teaching is identical. Onsite participants do practice sessions in the room with direct access to the coordinator, and receive printed material and campus lunches. Online participants join the same live sessions and work the same exercises digitally.

How many onsite seats are there?

In-person participation is capped at 30 seats so the hands-on sessions remain workable. Seats are confirmed in order of payment. Online participation is not capped.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. An official Certificate of Participation is awarded and distributed at the close of Day 3. Online participants receive a digital certificate by email.

How do I pay, and what do I upload?

Pay through SBI Collect first, then download the e-receipt. Enter the DU / reference number in the form and upload the receipt as a PDF, JPG or PNG up to 5 MB. It is stored securely in the institute database.

Will I get a confirmation?

Yes — a confirmation email with your registration reference is sent as soon as you submit the form. A second email follows once the payment has been verified.

What if I need a GST invoice?

Is accommodation available on campus?
