Programme Overview
Most plants chase energy savings one exchanger at a time. Process integration inverts that: it treats the plant as a single thermal system, establishes the minimum energy it could possibly need, and only then designs the network to get there.
The course follows the composite-curve and pinch-design methods of Kemp's Pinch Analysis and Process Integration — from data extraction and energy targeting, through heat exchanger network design and retrofit, to the extensions into water and hydrogen systems.
Every day pairs teaching with worked industrial case studies and a hands-on practice session. Close to a third of the programme is applied work, closing with a group discussion and quiz on the final day.
You leave with a method, not a lecture. Stream data extraction, targeting, network design and the economics to defend it — applied to plants like your own.
Establish the thermodynamic minimum first, so you never design toward a target you cannot justify.
Most engineers work on existing plants. Retrofit and energy relaxation are taught alongside new design.
Capital-cost targeting, area and unit targets, and the optimum ΔTmin trade-off that management will ask about.

The face of the course, Dr Alok K Saboo, is a distinguished chemical engineer, energy consultant and one of the early pioneers in the application of pinch technology and resilient process design. He is currently a distinguished visiting professor in Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. During his long illustrious career, he has worked with Professor Bodo Linnhoff, who developed the pinch analysis method, has developed pinch analysis software packages, and carried out revamp studies for more than 500 process plants across the world.
A Gold Medallist from IIT Kanpur, Dr Saboo earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison under Professor Manfred Morari, a process design and control stalwart. He worked as an independent consultant to leading refineries and petrochemical companies for more than four decades and subsequently founded Energy Consultants Pvt Ltd, where he serves as Managing Director.
His consulting career has taken him from refineries and petrochemical complexes to a wide range of process industries, including breweries, oleochemicals, steel, alumina, and power plants. He has undertaken major assignments for Reliance Industries, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, HPCL, ESSAR Oil UK, and many other leading national and international companies.
His work has delivered annual savings ranging from millions to hundreds of millions of US Dollars across major industrial sites. With experience of more than 500 large-scale projects under his belt, he has also trained engineers and industry professionals in pinch technology and energy conservation, and has actively contributed to research in pinch analysis. He stands tall in the field of Process Integration, has been recognized worldwide for his contributions, and is considered India's foremost authority in industrial applications of pinch technology.
The programme follows the targeting-first structure of Kemp's standard text, taught with worked industrial cases throughout.
An official Certificate of Participation is awarded and distributed at the close of Day 3.
