African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO), which used to be called Afro-Asian Rural Development Organization, was founded in 1962. This shows how far-sighted the social and political leaders of Asia and Africa were when they saw the need for cooperation in agriculture and rural development between the countries. AARDO is an independent organization made up of the governments of countries in Africa and Asia. It is one of the earliest examples of South-South cooperation in rural development in the Afro-Asian region. The Organization was set up to encourage coordinated efforts, sharing of experiences, and working together to help reach the goals of rural area development. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), and the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP), all give AARDO an observer status. It also encourages working together with different international groups to improve the economic and social well-being of rural communities.
In December 1959, the institute was started in a room in the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute's canteen building at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur. The institute moved to its current location on the Grand Trunk Road in Kanpur district, near the Kalyanpur neighbourhood, in 1963. The campus was built in a modernist style by Achyut Kanvinde. During IIT Kanpur's first ten years, a group of nine US universities (MIT, UCB, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Case Institute of Technology, and Purdue University) helped set up its research labs and academic programmes as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP).
A training programme on innovative technologies of renewable energies for rural areas is being organised by the African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO), in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. The goal of the programme is to help rural communities address the challenges posed by climate change.
The purpose of this class is to educate participants on how to combat the negative effects of climate change through the use of engineering principles that are specific to renewable energy sources. Through the course of this initiative, the technical know-how is being distributed to the 32 member countries of AARDO that are located in Africa and Asia. Participants in the course will include middle and senior-level executives from government departments and ministries, as well as agricultural engineers and scientists who are involved in the design, implementation, planning, and appraisal of policies
