Objective and Scope

Extend your knowledge of seismic analysis to advanced tools, such as response history and nonlinear static (pushover) analyses which are needed

  1. To verify the success of code-based design of structures that rely on linear elastic response, idealized design spectrum, R-factors and capacity design approach, and
  2. To check on performance objectives and seismic behavior of new as well as existing buildings and bridges upto collapse.

Course Content

  • Review of structural dynamics and seismic design
  • Response history analysis, choice and scaling of ground motion and interpretation of analysis results for design
  • Nonlinear modeling and analysis using lumped plasticity
  • Pushover Analysis as Nonlinear Static Analysis, Basic concepts of capacity curve and target displacements and acceptability criteria
  • Capacity spectrum and Displacement/Coefficient method
  • Illustration with 2D and 3D models of real life structures

Course Fees

The fee for professional engineers is Rs.18,000 plus 18% GST per candidate which is payable in full in advance. It includes course material, lunch, and tea breaks. The postgraduate students and faculty of civil engineering may request a discount in course fee.


Limited twin-sharing accommodation is available on first-come first-served basis at IITK Guest House on payment. Typical charges for boarding and lodging is about Rs. 2000/- per person per day.


On successful completion, a certificate will be issued by the Centre of Continuing Education and Department of Civil Engineering of IIT Kanpur.
