Workshop on High Resolution X-ray and Electron Diffraction Supported by TEQIP and DST (FIST)

Structural characterization of materials is a routine yet an important step in preparation of materials. Typically X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction in a transmission electron microscope are carried out in most laboratories while sophisticated diffraction techniques such as synchrotron and neutron diffraction employed rather exclusively to investigate the finer details. In addition to providing information about the structure of materials, lab-scale X-ray diffraction can also provide information about preferred orientation of crystallites or texture, types of phases present, as well as determination of the lattice parameter, micro-strain, residual stresses and dislocation density in the bulk samples. In addition, different X-ray techniques can provide a wealth of information for thin films e.g. crystallinity, epitaxiality, layer thickness, orientation relationship between substrate and thin film as well as size, shape and distribution of zero dimensional quantum dots and other nano structures. The present workshop aims to cover the broad area of X-ray diffraction with special emphasis on High Resolution X-ray diffraction encompassing Rocking Curve, Reflectivity, Reciprocal Space Mapping, X-ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis, crystallographic texture and structure refinement using Rietveld refinement. In addition X-ray scattering techniques such as small angle X-ray scattering will also be covered to provide a complete spectrum of X-ray characterization tools. A brief overview of electron diffraction in a transmission electron microscope and more recent electron back scatter diffraction in a scanning electron microscope will be covered for a general audience.

The workshop aims to provide in-depth theoretical knowledge about the principles of the advanced diffraction techniques and provide information about the state of the art equipment available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Advanced Centre for Materials Science of IIT Kanpur. The workshop will include classroom sessionsfrom eminent experts as well as tutorial sessions and hands-on training on data analysis along with visit to the facilities at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering acquired under the FIST grant. The workshop also aims to attract the faculty members and graduate students in TEQIP affiliated institutes engaged in research in the broad areas of material science with special interest in using high-resolution diffraction as an effective characterization tool.
